A buddy of mine was telling me that he runs 24 hours of light until he is ready to switch to flower then 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark.
This would save me a lot of time but I’m wondering what everyone on here thinks?
I can see the potential risks and rewards of doing things in that way.
I’m not sure how time is saved when it’s 24hrs, either way. I’m just messing with ya @RageTillOldAge454 And I use a timer, saves me all kinds of time. Still messing with ya!
There’s lots of different opinions on this. I lean towards believing that all living things need a rest period for maximum health so I give mine a period of darkness in all stages of growth. Happy growing!
I do 24 hours for about the first 2 weeks. It is easier for me to keep high temp and rh in the early seedling stage. I then switch to 18/6 til I flip to 12/12.
I’ve been running the light in my veg tent 24hrs the last couple of years. The plants definitely grow faster but seem to be pickier about ph than when they get a little dark period. They also seem to flower faster once put in the flower tent
I do the same and for the same reasons. You can run 24/0 but if you reach your DLI (Daily Light Integral) with 16 hours, you’re just wasting electricity. If you have lower light levels you may want to do that. If you do then you definitely would be running insufficient light when the schedule goes to 12/12.
I have grown a lot of plants veg stage 18/6 flowering 12/12 and fill the tent wall to wall personally 24/0 is a waste of electricity. My opinion is based on quality lighting. It beening the most important peace of equipment for indoor grow.
ppl do it but i like to give em a rest.. that smell when the lights go off says to me theres a good reason for it.. its like the plants are finally exhaling after a long day of work(growth)
Welcome to the community @InTheTent This is a great place to get good growing knowledge and/or spread your knowledge to all of us.
That part used to be my favorite time, every evening. But, and I’ll try to keep this short, I was using the Photone app (with no diffuser, I thought that was right at the time) to gauge my light intensity. A few grows in when I was updating the app, it said my phone was no longer compatible, it didn’t say anything about a diffuser. Anyway, I sprung for a low end PAR sensor from Amazon and compared it to the Photone app, and according to the PAR sensor, I had my lights too close the whole time, by about 450PPFD. From that point on, that large burst of aroma at lights out was no more. Maybe a little every once in a while but nothing like before.
I don’t know if this is anything. I don’t have a third light meter to verify which is more accurate, the Photone app or my low end sensor. I’m assuming the PAR sensor is correct and I was hurting the plants. Thought maybe I was smelling the loss of too many terps. But for all I know, it could be the opposite. I might now be starving them of light. Just a little FYI for you.
Sorry @RageTillOldAge454 I don’t mean to hi-jack your topic here.
Happy growing!
I’ve done 24/0, 20/4, and 18/6. My current scheme is a 6/2 schedule, 3X a day and then flip to regular 12/12 for flowering. Love this schedule for the summer months and also good for winter/spring vegging. The tent never seems to get too hot (ok, sometimes, but imagine if it was on for 18hrs!), and in the winter months it never gets too cold (I grow in my garage). Also great in that you never have to wait too long for the lights to come on if you want to pamper them, ogle them, fondle them, whatever!
I run 24 hrs for the first 1.5 to 2 weeks then run 18/6. Like all living things, everyone needs a rest. Blasting your plant for 24 hours then all of sudden slamming it into a 12/12 will shock the plant. Sorta like overfeeding a fat kid then putting him on a diet. There is a thing called light stress and it will stunt your growth. Ask me how i know
Welcome , I tend to agree , it isn’t natural to 24/7 your plants . I really don’t care what the “science” says , many times science has had to eventually catch up with natural reality . Like mathematics , science is only a description of the process not the actual truth . This is why there is an error in all calculators , machinery etc . An error cannot in reality be “accounted” for as this is merely adding to the original error . What my stoned mind is trying to say is , trust logic . A few million years of day and night can’t be wrong . Peace .
This is the right answer. While there may not be a lot of applications to say using a 24 hour veg schedule is a great idea, it has been proven to work beyond a scientific idea by many here.
Trying to apply opinions as logic or ideas that naturally occurring will always exceed artificial supplementation is a closed minded position that will limit personal experiences and knowledge. Synthetic fertilizer and artificial light are capable of outperforming organics and the sun. Imagine if we refused to accept either of these as applicable solutions.
