hi Guys, been watching here for a few months as i learn how to stumble along with learning how to grow from seeds. last year an employee gave me 2 plants, i put them in the ground and i had fairly good luck with them, though i really did nothing to them other than water them once in a while, and pick one of them up when it fell over. I did pretty good, i thought, but do know, now after being here a while, i pulled them much too early, and dried them incorrectly and even jarred them incorrectly as i had mold in my last jar and I likely had some in my other jars i lacked the ability to notice…
fast forward to january, guy that gave me the plants was selling all his indoor equipment, i got a 4x4 x 7 maybe? and a 2x4x5 tent an MH light and a vipar spectra v600 a few fans, a grow dome with a light and all kinds of other maintenance goodies, i was told that my great grandmother could take a splinter off a telephone pole and grow a pine tree out of it, so i finally succumbed to the pressure and price reductions and I bought it.
i stumbled across a bunch of sites and found this one, and signed up, i learned a bunch of things right off, dont over water seedlings, ask a bunch of questions, and dont rip the roots off when transplanting seedlings. so as is my way, here i am 6 weeks later, have not asked anything yet, still over watered seedlings and totally ripped a big section of the roots off one of the plants when transplanting to different pots. so i am off to a great start.
i started off with 8 seeds from mixed bags i had saved over the past year or so, and 1 seed from what was one of the plants i grew last year i called cousin it. i was sure i would kill some, all 9 of them grew, and are doing well. i started them in damp paper towels with a bit of hydrogen peroxide on 2/20/20. i then used small seedling peat cups with happy frog, then as they grew i dropped them into larger peat pots filled with happy frog. After about 4 weeks i bought four 7 gallon dirt pots they were called, sort of like what i imagine a smart pot would be like maybe? it was a local store and that is what they had. i used natures living soil and used their living soil technique listed on their site and filled each 7 gallon pot. i used happy frog for the living soil mix. i took the 3 biggest plants, and the cousin it plant and dropped the plants in with their peat cups still in tact, though rather soggy. i used some mycorrhizal inoculant in the holes i made for the cup to fit in.
1 week later i bought 5 more of the 7 gallon dirt pots, i only had enough of the natures living soil to make enough for 4 pots. there is quite a few noticeable differences in sizes between the plants now, all 4 that i had started in the living soil are much bigger than the ones i transplanted a week later, and the 1 pure happy frog is falling behind. another benifit of the natures living soil, it’s a natural social distancing tool ! it does have quite an odor, but not nearly as bad as what i expected after reading reviews.
i will try to post pics here in a few, i took weekly pictures, except for 1 week, they will be 6 weeks old on thursday. with everything going on my mind has been to wrapped up to even thing about any training techniques i wanted to try to manidold a couple, maybe even fim a couple. or some lst, or something. and i am not sure if i am too late to do some of them.
also i plan to transplant them outdoors here in a couple weeks if the weather looks good. i think they are getting really close to showing sex, i think i see white pistols on a few plants but they look green under a magnifier. i will try to learn how to take close up pics with my phone here soon.
eventually i want to buy a few seeds here, many types are on my saved list already. i am quite sure after research i am lacking in my lights, and looking at making some sort of light system, i have looked at the dyi light thread, but keep getting distracted by grow threads !! and well now that i see all the grow threads and want to use a spare room and expand. so here i am, been smoking 20 years, and now i am spending all my time and extra money on it, have i finally graduated to being an addict? i sure hope so, this has been pretty fun !
i have other issues i am dealing with on and off humidity issues, , i run wood heat and it is dry dry in the small tent as i have the MH running in there, and the led in the big tent. common sense tells me to move it, but the plants in that tent love it so much i cant bring myself to swap. i leave the door open in the tents during the day. RH down to 26 at times in the small tent, and up to 68 in the large tent.
for now i am off to try to learn how to upload pictures, and add tags for people
thanks for reading and any help along the way, i hope i put this in the right spot on the forum, you guys rock !!!
