1st real grow from bag seeds

hi Guys, been watching here for a few months as i learn how to stumble along with learning how to grow from seeds. last year an employee gave me 2 plants, i put them in the ground and i had fairly good luck with them, though i really did nothing to them other than water them once in a while, and pick one of them up when it fell over. I did pretty good, i thought, but do know, now after being here a while, i pulled them much too early, and dried them incorrectly and even jarred them incorrectly as i had mold in my last jar and I likely had some in my other jars i lacked the ability to notice…

fast forward to january, guy that gave me the plants was selling all his indoor equipment, i got a 4x4 x 7 maybe? and a 2x4x5 tent an MH light and a vipar spectra v600 a few fans, a grow dome with a light and all kinds of other maintenance goodies, i was told that my great grandmother could take a splinter off a telephone pole and grow a pine tree out of it, so i finally succumbed to the pressure and price reductions and I bought it.

i stumbled across a bunch of sites and found this one, and signed up, i learned a bunch of things right off, dont over water seedlings, ask a bunch of questions, and dont rip the roots off when transplanting seedlings. so as is my way, here i am 6 weeks later, have not asked anything yet, still over watered seedlings and totally ripped a big section of the roots off one of the plants when transplanting to different pots. so i am off to a great start.

i started off with 8 seeds from mixed bags i had saved over the past year or so, and 1 seed from what was one of the plants i grew last year i called cousin it. i was sure i would kill some, all 9 of them grew, and are doing well. i started them in damp paper towels with a bit of hydrogen peroxide on 2/20/20. i then used small seedling peat cups with happy frog, then as they grew i dropped them into larger peat pots filled with happy frog. After about 4 weeks i bought four 7 gallon dirt pots they were called, sort of like what i imagine a smart pot would be like maybe? it was a local store and that is what they had. i used natures living soil and used their living soil technique listed on their site and filled each 7 gallon pot. i used happy frog for the living soil mix. i took the 3 biggest plants, and the cousin it plant and dropped the plants in with their peat cups still in tact, though rather soggy. i used some mycorrhizal inoculant in the holes i made for the cup to fit in.

1 week later i bought 5 more of the 7 gallon dirt pots, i only had enough of the natures living soil to make enough for 4 pots. there is quite a few noticeable differences in sizes between the plants now, all 4 that i had started in the living soil are much bigger than the ones i transplanted a week later, and the 1 pure happy frog is falling behind. another benifit of the natures living soil, it’s a natural social distancing tool ! it does have quite an odor, but not nearly as bad as what i expected after reading reviews.

i will try to post pics here in a few, i took weekly pictures, except for 1 week, they will be 6 weeks old on thursday. with everything going on my mind has been to wrapped up to even thing about any training techniques i wanted to try to manidold a couple, maybe even fim a couple. or some lst, or something. and i am not sure if i am too late to do some of them.

also i plan to transplant them outdoors here in a couple weeks if the weather looks good. i think they are getting really close to showing sex, i think i see white pistols on a few plants but they look green under a magnifier. i will try to learn how to take close up pics with my phone here soon.

eventually i want to buy a few seeds here, many types are on my saved list already. i am quite sure after research i am lacking in my lights, and looking at making some sort of light system, i have looked at the dyi light thread, but keep getting distracted by grow threads !! and well now that i see all the grow threads and want to use a spare room and expand. so here i am, been smoking 20 years, and now i am spending all my time and extra money on it, have i finally graduated to being an addict? i sure hope so, this has been pretty fun !

i have other issues i am dealing with on and off humidity issues, , i run wood heat and it is dry dry in the small tent as i have the MH running in there, and the led in the big tent. common sense tells me to move it, but the plants in that tent love it so much i cant bring myself to swap. i leave the door open in the tents during the day. RH down to 26 at times in the small tent, and up to 68 in the large tent.

for now i am off to try to learn how to upload pictures, and add tags for people

thanks for reading and any help along the way, i hope i put this in the right spot on the forum, you guys rock !!!

To tag someone just put the @ symbol in front of the persons name you are trying to reach like this. @RD-Haes.
No space between.
Looks good. You’re well on your way.
Lots of excellent growers here to help if needed. Happy growing. :+1::v:

thanks guys, i would had to know i was making this adding tags thing too complicated and yes anyone tag along by all means. my failures are usually of epic proportions, so may just be some entertainment here.

I still am not sure my ultimate plan, did not expect 9/9 seedlings to take off, feels like i am more responding to what is growing than going on with any sort of plan. are they too old for me to start topping/manifolding or anything of the sorts ? i do live in a legal state so i can grow outside, unfortunately i am in the middle of town which complicates things there, and the laws are still pretty cloudy, cant be seen by a public roadway without binoculars or an airplane… i also have a nursing home behind me, they sit on their porches all day long looking at my growing area.

@Dman1969 lets see if the tag works. i may just graduate to ilgm noob level 1 here

oh and also i noticed that the forum does not resize pictures, are they ok to post at the size i am? i have not used a forum since the 90’s I am sure picture size etiquette has changed since then now that everyone is not on dialup, but wanted to be sure.

thanks again

every time i read some of the things i did wrong i have to laugh. once you do it and then find out you screwed up u wont do it again. you will remember and then you can stop someone else. trust me i have been stopped a few times

you never know some of those old timers might teach u a thing or two! people always make the mistake that just because we are old we are not interesting. us vintage folks got to stick together lol. some of the wildest stories i ever heard were from old girls. one time an old girl told me she gave a million dollars worth away before she found out it was worth a nickle. i about fell over no shame in her game

thanks for the tips on the preview of pics,

i only said about the nursing home as to the added complexity to staying incognito with respect to staying within my local laws. i am pretty sure some may have noticed my 2 plants last year, and didn’t say anything other than to applaud when i mow the hill on their property as their maintenance people wont do it… i think that buys me flexibility with most of them though : ) many of the people i hang around with are older than i, some make vintage look brand new.

so now am torn between buying a fence, or commandeering another room in my house and going full size grow room, i imagine i will wind up doing both. i am out of room in both tents now. so i may try some trimming tomorrow. after doing more reading i dont think i am too late on any of the plants to try to manifold a couple. some of them are very bushy already, so think i may leave them for now.

and i guess i did not graduate to level 1 noob yet after all, i had to wait 7 hours till i could post again.

@pptrsha1 I use a room for flower and a closet for veg. I would wear the zipper off a tent as much as I go check on my girls.:joy::sunglasses::call_me_hand:

I think about that everytime I happen my tent. It’s not top of the so I figure sooner or later they’ll bust on me. At least it will give a good excuse to buy top of the line.

and then there was 11, decided to try to manifold 2 of the smaller ones see how they do, one i think i chopped too high, the other 1 i think i did right, but now have 2 clones dipped in cloning solution and happy frog, so may have more to tend to now. but i don’t have high hopes for them,

and i hear the zipper thing, i wonder how long mine will last, me and zippers do not get along, so i know it’s gonna happen. and i have thought about the 2 rooms thing. years ago i used to build complex chemistry recycling and and treatment systems for x-ray and printing processors, so the hydroponics aspect is really tugging at my sleeve. been watching some of those grows as well. i know i am going to get hooked on that as well. so now i may need 3 rooms, lol time to start thinking what to throw out and what rooms to conquer next !!

i gotta go back to work soon, before you can smell my house from the next county !! lol
