Well my 200 lbs of rice hulls and 50 lbs of gypsum finally came in yall. I’ve taken the past 3 days to rework 6 of the 8 beds. Each one I dug half the bed out and mixed in 1- 10 lb brick of coco husks and 15 lbs of rice hulls into the bottom 12" along with 2 lbs of gypsum, then I mixed another 10 lbs of rice hulls and 3 lbs of gypsum in the top 6". Then I sowed crimson clover to run as a cover crop this year. This is the 3 season in these beds and hopefully these additions will help keep me from having to do anymore structure work to our soil for a long, long, time. ![]()

It be easy turn them into greenhouse wouldn’t it looking good @VaHillbilly
I been thinking about wrapping one in clear plastic after we harvest and leaving a flap for a door on one end and try some cabbage or broccoli and see how they do. ![]()

I finally got the last two beds mixed up and all the clover sown. I also added a half a lb of epsom salt to balance the 3lbs of additional calcium we added to the beds. Hoping that the Crimson clover will help with any Nitrogen draw down but we will see I guess. This mix is very carbon heavy so we will have to just play it by ear I guess. I was thinking if the clover isn’t enough I may add some ground malted barley and see if that helps any. Any thoughts @Budbrother ? ![]()
I’d add the malted barley now. Provides enzymes and micro heard food to speed availability. The clover is gonna be your green manure source for N, correct? Did you add another source onto the soil?
Yes Sir, that’s what I was hoping to do. Just to use it as a living mulch until they flower out then chop and drop them. I was trying to talk with a local brewery about getting some of their grain waste to use but will probably just end up ordering a bag, I would think it wouldn’t take but maybe a half lb or so per bed. Maybe hit it after this clover establishes a liitle more, not alot maybe 7-10 days more then add it and water it in good, I don’t want to use it too much but I think it could help boost our microbial and fungal growth alot. Maybe use it again mid season if the plants look like they need it. Thank you my friend,
your advice is always on point. ![]()

No to tell you the truth the corn husks, cobs, and stalks, I chopped up and added to the beds as mulch after our 2024 harvest, with the added 2" of compost last spring it kinda made them a little hot last season so Im hoping it has balanced out more for this year. We will see ![]()

Also I forget to tell yall but the remaining 4 white truffle autos didn’t pop, ![]()
. It goes that way sometimes I guess, they were free so I ain’t complaining, but dang I was really looking forward to some more of that it was very good smoke. ![]()

So I went ahead and loaded up a germination tray of 30 and threw the top on after spraying the soil down good and dropping beans in each hole. I will post pics after I get home tomorrow night or monday morning. I was disappointed after the white truffles didnt come up so I decided to just drop 30ish regs and we will narrow em down as we need too.
surely outta a whole tray I’ll get a few to come up maybe ![]()

my germ rates have been sucking lately the past couple months it seems. I may go back to peat pellets. Usually have at least a 90ish% success rate with them. But for about a year or longer now everything I’ve dropped into my soil mix came right on up. ![]()
![]()
, I haven’t changed anything or added anything so I dont know whats up but lets hope this tray responds better than the last 7 or 8 solo cups have. ![]()

Here they are an update on whats been happening here in Hillbilly Holler past week or so. Its been kinda ruff, We loaded up and headed for Nashville last Sunday 7 hr drive one way and was there until Friday. Got home after midnight on Friday and had to drive to Roanoke (3½hr drive one way) Saturday morning for my 2nd job and made it back home around 5 am this morning before I had to go into my normal job at 8. So Im a little exhausted. ![]()

Well done! Do you know where the Sand Cave is?
No Sir, I haven’t had the pleasure. Is it close to Opryland?
No, close to you. A buddy was camping there last week and hiked to it.
Cool, I haven’t heard of it but I will have to ask around and find it now. ![]()
