The Forbidden Grove

They do not need the acidic soil, that is why I went with them.

Pumpkin row prep

Tilled about 40’ only 8-10” down, removed tilled soil, added chicken house clean out from a year ago, going to weed whack around row and add to chicken clean out in row, back fill with soil and cap with horse pasture dirt and mulch with old dead leaves from the surrounding woods. Wish me luck :four_leaf_clover: will probably do the exact same step for watermelons as well, about 30’ away.

I love the idea of honey berries. They really vary in flavor. It is a berry that has become popular in the last 5-10 years, and there are now a lot of improved cultivars VS the wild berries. Much breeding of honey berries is making crosses for sale in garden centers. They are blueberry bush like in the way they grow bush shape. Have you ever seen or done Oso berries (aka Indian plum).? They look exactly the same as they are growing. Until they set fruit they look like cloned bushes. They are a lot bigger than blueberries too.

Some more easy ones to do:
-Gooseberries: ditto for improved cultivars

-currents: the golden and pink ones are
sweeter than the dark red ones

-raspberries: you got early and late reds,
goldens and yellows, and black
raspberries (not black berries)

-blackberries: thornless and improved sweet
ones that are more upright and
ones that are less sprawling

Gomi berry: bigger bush, antioxidants

Elderberries: improved cultivars for sweetness,
Oldest cold remedy, immune
booster. Best pancake syrup
besides maple.

Hybrid rubus crosses: tayberry, marrionberry,
loganberry, boysenberry

Pear, apple, plum, and jujubee. But now we are getting into trees. Ha. Next post if you want to know my favorite types.

I thought the same thing. Nice looking soil. It’s also hard to not be jealous of all that land. I only have 7500 square feet. I have a fruit tree or bush in just about every spot I can though. Wife thinks I am crazy…. She is just glad you have to look real hard thru my food forest to see all the cannabis, ha.

@plumbdand @noddykitty1 find yourself 10-15 acres in the country not sure where your located but land around me goes for 1500-2000 an acre depending on the type of land, that’s my goal for my life is to own as much land as I can preferably 200-250 acres by retirement, 100% agree the soil is super loamy and dark, smells good too!! Actually just finished up my watermelon row and I did the same thing as far as layering the base with chicken house scraps and backfilling, really hoping this turns out well, ended up with enough fill to not have to add pasture dirt so I did some quick weed whacking and got some good mulch for atleast one row before the rain.

Im on 2 acres of flat prarie at 5000ft elevation. There were no trees on my property when I moved here. Dig down 1.5ft and its all clay or caliche. It has lots of good mineral but it so dense that the only thing that grows naturally is prarie grass. My pond has no liner. I lose more water from evaporation then ground seepage. Having ducks help seal it also. Theres companies that sell liquid duck poop to seal ponds without liners.

@plumbdand ive only visited areas like that and probably the closest example would be like Colorado Springs as far as heat and dryness the dry heat is amazing though!!! Very similar to wood heat but outdoors

You got some pretty good looking farmland there. You plan on selling produce this summer?

@W.B.elpaso yes I would like to sell some produce we don’t use hey speaking of that check this out and also @plumbdand i bought the boogie brew kit which i also said yes to the protein powder as well for foliar sprays, so this first example I gave all the tomato’s the foliar spray and the second batch I didn’t.

Foliar feeding of pure protein

No foliar spray

@W.B.elpaso this year I’ll probably be selling more starter plants than actual fruits or vegetables during harvest, just trying it out and see how I make out I for damn sure don’t need all 100 or better tomato plants I have started right now. Strawberries in the garden are really coming to life also, we have had an unusual abundance of rain this may.
