Sorry I didn’t really know where to post this at its not my own recipe.
I have a bag of Canna Terra professional plus (statue of liberty on the front) and thought to myself “yeahh spend the bit extra get some top notch soil”
the PH of the soil is coming up at about 7.6… I’ve read this is too high, I don’t understand why the soil thats designed for cannabis plants plants would come at a PH level that I need to ajdust before usage? If i need to lower the PH, what is a simple and cost effective way to do so?
Planning on going clean with the water at first and adding nutes as and when the plant asks for it.
First off, PH meters (Any worth there salt) will come will a solution to calibrate the meter with. Need to calibrate it right off the bat and every 2 weeks there after if not more. Find a good or the best way for your situation to water until it runs out the bottom. Collect a bit try to get a decent sample not right at the start of run off but just a bit after, not to dirty make sure no chunks of dirt fertilizers etc getting into your sample. Check with calibrated meter and try not to move it once you get it in the water sample, swishing it around will cause bad readings. it can take awhile for the reading to settle in. When the number stops climbing or falling for like 10 to 15 seconds of waiting then that’s your measurement. Dab off meter with paper towel and repeat 2 more times take average.
Ph of your run off should be between 6.3 - 6.8 in soil
I agree on calibrating your meter as soon as you get it
The better ones will be already good to go but I check anyway and do regular tests to ensure it is reading accurately
What type of meter are you using to test ph and how are you obtaining the info ?
Does that mean i need to water the soil until i’ve got it coming out the bottom? Or am i doing that once it gets a bit bigger? Cuz it seems like that would be too much water when i only put it in the pot this morning
It did specify in the manual that it comes calibrated and ready to go, but i’ve got the solution as well so will have a go at calibrating in a little while.
I’ve been using a Semlos that i bought off amazon
(scuse the noobiness) I just took the end off, put it in the soil, kinda moved it round a bit then just let it settle. First time i did it it was 7.x 2nd time i did it it was 5.x.
Am i right in thinking that if i’ve bought Canna Terra all singing all dancing soil then the PH should be correct anyway?
I use apple cider vinegar to lower pH that’s too high, cant get much easier than that. Use a little at a time and take regular readings until you get the pH where you want it (6.5 is ideal for soil). If the pH is too low, I use pH UP for aquariums from the local pet store. Good luck!
You’re getting wacky readings due to sticking the PH tester in the soil. It’s made for liquids. Try testing your water, should be close to 7.0. To test soil try a solo cup or similiar with holes in bottom… place a little soil in it… run some water thru soil, and catch the water that flows thru… then test that water to know soil PH
Overwhelmed by the quality of the responses here guys, thank you so much. Gonna go make a soily watery solution now. I’m learning so much every day on here I love it! If i get some half decent buds you’re all invited round for a smoke
Yes and hot water isn’t good for the probe. Many pH meters have ATC (auto temp correction) but even those typ do NOT account for the fact that the pH itself actually changes very slightly with temp. In short, don’t use the pH meter in hot water and ideally the sample should be close to room temp.
