Seedling water question

Hey guys, first time trying to grow anything, had a question about watering these guys because I can’t tell if I’m watering too much or not enough. I thought I was watering too often so I’ve been cutting back but then today another one drooped it’s leaves quite a bit.

So far I’ve been just using a small spray bottle and giving maybe 15 squirts every day or every other day. But the top of the soil looks dry after an hour or so. All the cups have holes in the bottom and sides but I’ve never gotten any run off. But it’s also a small amount of water. Just not sure if I should be watering more at a time at this point?

Thanks guys, and these are northern light feminized and in fox farm ocean forest soil.

@Parabol413 put some clear plastic cups over them and mist the cup. Seedlings like the extra humidity and will pull moisture from the air inside.

Please post all picts in white light or flash. In the burple light you cant see anything helpfull.

Seedlings require very little water and as @Fieldofdreams pointed out a clear dome provides the moisture that’s taken in by leaves until the roots are more established and start feeding the plant. A shot glass daily for now and water that a few inches around the main to promote root growth :love_you_gesture:

Are you running alot of wind on them?

Hey guys, so I didn’t have any plastic cups but I used some sandwich bags, clipped the corners and put them over with rubber bands.

Gave them each a shot glass of water. First time I’ve noticed water actually come out the drain holes of the cups.

When I go to water them tomorrow I’ll snap a picture in normal lighting so you can actually see them.

Thanks again guys!

You don’t need to water every day if you have a cover on them.
Mine is a week old and I have not watered yet. And probably wont for another week.

Gotcha. What would be a good indication when they need to be watered again? Just put those bags on today, but normally after I’d spray them the top of the soil would seem pretty dry a couple hours later.

Appreciate the input!

When the cup it is in feels light.
Feel how heavy they are now and wait till it almost feels like dry dirt.
It will feel surprisingly light. Cannabis likes wet dry cycles…

Hey @Parabol413 . There is a good string on here somewhere from Hellraiser that hits on the “light cup” thumb and finger swing method or the thing that @Spiney_norman mentioned for watering. Its pretty detailed and covers the entire seedling topic. In my case I always found it was really easy to overwater them…or then sometimes overreact and dry them out instead. Once they hit critical mass everything was fine but until then it was always an anxiety filled nail biter. An alternative is going with a tray and a mat. Its not old school. But it takes the overwatering thing off the table. If they have water, and its PH’d correctly then they can wick it up as they need it. Don’t stop what you are doing. Its an alternative only. And my weed isn’t any better because of it. Pic below less the dome that goes over top in case you are curious.

That’s a really good idea. Perhaps I’ll give that a shot my next go round. After giving them each a shot of water and putting the bags over them a couple of them really took off. I actually pulled the bag off one today because it’s leaf was bent against the bag. That does lead me to another question though.

I have drain holes in the cups and a second cup sleeves over it to catch water and such, I noticed the biggest one has a root coming out of one of the drain holes. Does that mean he needs to be transplanted or is it still okay for a bit?

My goal is to transplant them into 15 gallon fabric pots I got and put them outside but it’s still pretty chilly.

Just wasn’t sure if that’s a sign of getting root bound or something. They’re still pretty small compared to some I’ve seen on here. Biggest is just starting to sprout it’s 3rd set of leaves and is 2-3” tall.

And one more question. (Sorry!) So I set up this little tent greenhouse for them, and as far as pests go I was thinking of mixing peppermint oil and water and spraying it along the perimeter of the tent to keep pests aetc away. Unless someone else has a better idea? Just looking to prevent extra trouble. Thanks guys!

@Parabol413 hello there! If you’ve got roots coming out of your cups it’s time to move up a size. Do you have any small pots you could temporarily transfer them into until you ready to go outside in your 15 gal pots? Let those ladies continue to spread their legs out.

Hey there thanks for the reply. So after making my last post I tried google and found a thread elsewhere with a similar situation where they said the only reason a root came out the bottom was to get to water and that if he got rid of the water the root would air prune itself.

I did leave the runoff in the bottom cup because there wasn’t enough to reach the main cup.

And this is my first time growing anything so I only have the 15 gal fabric pots. Which maybe I could move one into and put the other cups along side it but the little light I have on them wouldn’t cover more than one of those pots. Once I do transplant they’ll have to go outside for light. But it’s like 60 during the day and high 30’s low 40’s at night so I’d like it to warm up a little more before they go outside if possible. :stuck_out_tongue:

@Parabol413 air pruning is fine when your plant is in its forever home. If your telling the plant that it’s already maxed out it’s environment you run the risk of a temp stunt while the plant has to rethink its ability. It’ll start circling the cup internally. But this is imho. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll be fine either way you go!! Happy growing!! :seedling::seedling::sunny::evergreen_tree:
