Wanda, my white widow seedling, is only 5 days old and her cotyledon leaves are already turning yellow. It could be I am overwatering and leaching out the nutrients in the soil along with being too wet. I took the plastic dome off her to dry the soil out a little. I am trying to keep the humidity at 60%, temperature under 80F and the lights are on 25% and about 24" above plants. Fans are going to circulate air. The picture below is with plastic bottles over the seedlings.
I took them off to dry out the soil a bit. They are not potted in the big containers yet. I am just using them to elevate plants so I am not bending over so much. Any recommendations?
It’s normal for the cotyledons to yellow and eventually die. It’s very easy to dampen off the tiny tap roots with overwatering. Seedlings will take in the humidity through their leaves created by the dome and only need a shot glass of water every other day or so
@OGIncognito Thank you for your comment. Makes me feel a little easier that I am at least identifying what I am doing wrong. I read a lot on the topic but keep second guessing myself because I am not sure of anything I am doing. I am one of those people who can’t keep catus alive, ugh…
Get them in your soil pots, and remove the domes for good.
@Dexterado its not too soon to put them in pots? They are only 5 days old and their root system is probably not very developed.
Respectfully disagree with transplanting at 5 days above ground. She is still establishing a small root structure. I transplant autos or photos at 12-14 days. She still needs the dome and she is stretching so I would lower the light and set the DLI to 15
I agree with og. Wait two weeks to build some structure in the roots atleast.
@OGIncognito lower the lights to 15 and keep at 25%? I have a vivosun 4000 led.
Since they’re in that peat pod, I’d be transplanting now in a one gallon pot, and putting under around 15 dli light. But others don’t seem to agree. If they were started in solo cups, then I’d wait a couple weeks, so do what you think is right. That’s just what I would do.
DLI and PPFD are measurements of light particles that are hitting the plant every second and the total amount daily… this is a generic answer by the way. You can research these and get the scientific answer . Anyway these are increased through the growth stage up to harvest. There’s a smart phone app called PHOTON that works remarkably well. The manufacturer’s also have settings for the growth stages but I’ve also relied for on a meter
@OGIncognito Lol, I looked up dli before you responded back and thought boy, I sound stupid. Thanks for the app tip. I have it now on my phone. Hopefully, I can get the settings corrected for the lights. I noticed they were stretching a bit too.
@Dexterado the peat pod probably doesn’t have enough nutrients and adding dirt could help my little girl along with the light issue being corrected. Thanks for you recommendations.
Sweet! You’ll dig the app and thank yourself you did
THE APP WORKED PERFECTLY! it was so easy to use. Thank you again.
