Seed replacement requirements

These three soaked since yesterday morning, and all sank, then they went into peat pellets this morning (w/o extra water) and under a CFL in the closet. My house is old, sturdy (real 2x4’s, shiplap, etc.) and well insulated. So the 73 on my thermostat is consistent throughout the house. So the CFL is just for light if they pop and I don’t see it right away.

Cfl are good for germination @Whodat66 and temps should be good place dome ove rthem and you should see them pop in 24-36 hours

That’s the plan. I didn’t see a tail when I planted them, but I don’t want to break a tap-root. If these three (or some of them) don’t pop I’ll use the paper towels until I see a tail.

I soak in water then the paper towel even tho they don’t sink I have not had a problem with germination

I recently germ’d 10 seeds. 24 hr soaked them all. Straight to soil with 2. Moist towel with 3. 5 in peat pods… the soil n toil workd MUCH faster. The soil sproutd yesterday morning. Towel was later that afternoon (i transpantd into soil when i saw roots monday) two pods had them peeking out the morning so i just dropped all 5 in soil. Looks like all 3 methods germd 100%. I prefer the moist paper towel because it allows u to see SOME kind of progress

Edit: the peat pods arent at 100% yet but i see seeds rising in 4/5 3 hrs after planting pods in soil. :crossed_fingers:t5: On 5/5

Yeah, I’m thinking this was an oddity. It shouldn’t be rocket science to get a seed to grow, and I’m not even worried about fast, just reliable.

OK, planted the last two from the 1st 5-pack, and one from another. On the 5th morning one has popped and a stem is trying to straighten up through the dirt - so game on!

That said, it was the 2 from the same 5-pack that haven’s sprouted yet. All the numbers (on the little ziplock bag)are the same, so I assume the same “lot” or whatever. Not giving up on them, but at least I know the whole order was not damaged in shipping.

The one pod that showed good growth must have rotted somehow. I pulld 3 from pods n replantd. No real root growth. Think i over wet. But yea. Paper towel was my fav. :beers:

The bubble envelope I got also has bubble wrap on the inside, then the 4 packs of seeds. I am postulating that I may have happened to pick the 5-pack that was on top (or bottom, or nearest a heat source) to start with.

The day they arrived we had a week of 90 degree days, but I’ll guarantee they didn’t sit in my mailbox for more than 30 seconds

The leaves have cleared the soil now, so this evening should I separate them and start giving her some darkness?

Give that baby some light! Not too much. Early am sun thru a window or a -45 watt cfl

It has light 24/7. Wondering (without doing any research whatsoever because I’m lazy) when you switch to 18/6 to give her some rest.

I startd at 24/7. First couple days. I figured its an auto :man_shrugging:t5: Let it rock. But i have since learnd. Root growth increases in dark. Light is for ‘green’ parts. So give’m a few hours to nap. Think i settled into like 20-4/19-5 thru the week. If i leave the nights on all night :man_shrugging:t5: Again. Wont kill them

Which prompted the “separating them” question, because I need to keep the non-poppers under 24/7.

In looking at the germination guide, the only clue to the lighting is the time-lapse video, which shows no dark period until it has at least a few sets of leaves.

Stacy, here is my first sprout, so the whole shipment was not damaged. The 5 from one single ziplock did not sprout. I’m almost convinced that it was nearest a heat source, or getting direct sun from the mail truck windshield or something. It’ll probably be a year before I’m ready for replacements, and knowing how many seeds total don’t pop, so I’m just bookmarking this for future reference. Thanks for all the help everyone.

I bought the super Autoflower flower mix…following the germination methods from ilgm the results are great so far. But One of the seeds from the Bruce banner pack won’t sprout. After 3 days of not sprouting in the water I decided to place it in the soil alone with the rest of the sporuted seeds do see what might happen. So far at day 4 of the seeds being planted all sprouted out the soil except that same one. Any suggestions or requirements for replacement? Please help.
