totally confused now and as soon as these damn glasses get here I am going to take them out in the hills and blow them up!

dont do that.

use them if they do what you want, dont if they do not

The worst glasses IMHO are ones that just block the harmless visible light but allow the harmful rays in.

They darken the scene allowing your pupils to open wide and allow all the damaging light right in.

And with my luck those would probably be the ones I bought. They don’t call me schleprock for nothing.

You bet @mulch. My response was more aimed at everyone within the conversation. I don’t/haven’t used colored leds, just white. While I’ve seen a few in action, never really closely studied plants under them. I bet it would be a pain!

The cobs, mid power, and discreet diodes can be harmful due to intensity. But like you said, don’t stare at them and you greatly reduce your risk. And anything that reduces intensity will help.

I guess my point was that it shouldn’t take a scientific study to determine whether staring into bright light is dangerous or not. I don’t believe anyone here is that dense. And, nobody with an amazon led that provides uv needs to freak out at this point. Certain aspects of grow lighting can be hazardous, and you should protect yourself if using any such methods. The average light doesn’t need anything special. Lec, uvb or any supplements of such are definitely there though.

I just noticed on a bridgelux data sheet that they now have eye protection levels recommended on them. Could be a good resource.

Hard to tell unless you share this data sheet with us…
Uv rays cause Macular Degeneration. Rhetinal Myopethy can also happen. (Scarring behind the rhetina), and is irreparable.

I have MD in both eyes, and from 12-3 on the clock I have a RM in my right eye. Don;t think looking down or anywhere is safe in a grow room. Spend 60-80 bucks and save 1200 visits to the eye surgeon later.

That’s horrible!

The I couldn’t figure out how to link the pdf, but I did get a screenshot. This is from the bridgelux Vero 18 gen7. The data sheets are all avail for download on the bridgelux page for anyone interested.

Also, I’m in no way suggesting this is an end all be all for eye protection. It’s limited to the light provided by this particular diode, and is a manufacturer recommendation. So you kind of have to take that for what it is. I just felt it was nice to see, and hopefully it will become standard industry wide.
