Off Topic: Dungeons and Dragons

Any DnD players in the forum? I played a bunch when it was 2e. Just started again and am playing a rogue thief in 5e.

No myself, but my nephew and his friends get together once a year and play D&D. They are in their 30’s been playing since they were kids.

My other half and I played Pathfinder a few years ago, it was cheaper to get into that than D&D. My other half is looking to play again (preferably in person). We’re from SW Wisconsin area.

How did I not see this thread sooner?

I’ve been a D&D fan since the 70s. Older stepbrother would host campaign and I would get to sit in and listen. Read all the monster manuals and guides, etc. Loved it. Throughout the years I would play. I had a DM in college who was heavy into psychedelic drugs, and it was always interesting.
Also had a Macintosh in 1990. College. Dungeons of Moira(Paladin, trying to kill the BALROG) was the perfect distraction to studying. Well, one of the perfect distractions .
When I was in the military, a few folks had campaigns going, but rotating deployments often threw a monkey wrench in the game.
The best-when my oldest son got knee-deep into it in Jr High school. As an enthusiastic father,I hooked him up any time he wanted to buy books, die, or pewter figurines. He still plays in his 20s,after college. His mom doesn’t get it. Doesn’t matter.

Sometimes I try to be the cool dad, and we would have code words for attractive people.
"Oh, she has a 18/20 constitution " or “I met a few girls with 20/20 Dexterity ”

“Awww dad , thats gross” Never fails🤭

SL out.

Haha. That’s hilarious.

I played a bunch 30 years ago and just started playing again a few months ago. I’ve been playing every Saturday night and then again on alternating Thursdays and Fridays.

Many players use a website maned Dndbeyond for character generation, management, and dice rolls these days.

I have an iPad I use and take to the games with me.

I tried to get into it when the world was shut down using that same site. Seemed really cool and I loved the idea, but I was playing with some vets who’d been playing for decades and weren’t the best at explaining things. It was a lot more complaining because I did something wrong than actually helping me figure it out. But that site seemed super awesome for what all you could do.

The group I am in loves new players. We have a session every other month that is exclusively for introducing people to the game. We do an introduction to the game and the rules and then do a short one-shot campaign to show them how it all comes together.

That’s way cooler than the one I hopped on. It was intense right from the start and wasn’t the best learning experience unfortunately.

The range of experience at our tables usually ranges from complete beginner to players with decades of experience. We run 2 to 3 tables with 4 to 6 players at each table each week.

Check out your local gaming store. Groups that welcome new players will usually say so. Those that don’t are just cliques who don’t want new people messing with their space, which is okay, but if a group is going to behave that way, they should say so up front rather than drawing people in and then being unwelcoming.

I started playing when AD&D was first released (yes, I’m from the 1900’s) :stuck_out_tongue:

I have first editions of pretty much all of the books that Gary Gygax wrote for AD&D (and a few of his Gord the Rogue novels too). In a cool thread started by @TCBart back in November of 2023, I posted about my HO-scale mini figs that I collected over the years of running campaigns. I do and will always love RPGs, but especially AD&D. So many of my formative years were made much more tolerable by sitting with like-minded nerdy folks who enjoyed fantasy RPGs. I’m stoked that the genre is still going strong.

I looked at your minis. I have a few that I have yet to paint. A couple of the guys I play with go overboard with it and pull a flipping wagon full of books, minis, maps, and so on to each session.
