Hey everybody, just wanted to post here about my first indoor grow. I’m in a 4x4 tent with 4 lights, and the plants are about 4 weeks since placing in the ground. I just gave them their first feed yesterday, and I’m growing in coco with perlite. My main concern, although I’m not too concerned right now because they’re not in flower, is humidity. I’m not sure why I’m having humidity trouble in this tent, but I’m consistently 60-70% or more, and I can feel it in the tent. I have a clip fan on the way, and I got that small dehumidifier for the tent. Is that dehumidifier too small? It says it’s rated for small bedrooms and bathrooms. Also should I turn the inline fan up to its maximum level? Not sure why the humidity is so high- any help is appreciated. Like I said I’m not too worried quite yet because the plants are small, but I need to get this dialed in ASAP.
Pull air from the bottom and exhaust it through the top. As long as youve got good airflow, i wouldnt worry ablout humidity. I constantly run 60 and 70.
This is fine for germ and veg. Flower you will want 50-55% if possible.
Probably too small for flower. Definatly unecessary heat in your tent right now.
Do you have a controller for your inline fan, something that will turn it on and off based on environmental condition? If not you should get one asap. While you can maintain the environment manually, overall harvest potential is affected by environmental stability.
Open one or all of these to allow the air to move into the tent, this will likely lower your overall RH. Also vent the air out of the room your tent is in if possible. Otherwise the tent will pull the air you dont want right back into the tent. I used a portable ac unit window vent kit for this.

My last tip is for your future grows. It is best to fill the pot with soil all the way to the top of the pot. As the grow goes on the soil will compact and she will sink even lower in the soil. By having all that space between the soil and the top of the pot you create a stale air micro environment that could attrack some unwanted pests and the like. Also the more soil available the more roots a plant can make, bigger roots = bigger fruits. Also keans the soil can absorb more water. 3gal pots need watered more frequrntly then 5 gal.
Happy to help if I can, if you have more questions please feel free to tag me, @Docnraq
Guess I got one more. 6 plants in a 4x4 could get a little tight.
If I open those flaps/holes, what’s the point of the inline fan venting the air out? Won’t it just escape through those holes? I thought the idea was to keep the sealed environment to contain smell and use the inline fan/carbon filter to exhaust non-smelly air. The tent is in my basement (reasonably large open space), so I don’t need to really vent it anywhere I think. Thank you for the advice- much appreciated! I definitely am concerned about 6 plants in the 4x4 but I figure I’m probably gonna screw something up so the plants wont reach their full potential size.
To this I would also ask how am I supposed to get fresh air into the tent? Or do I need to get fresh air flow in? If I do need it, do I just open the flaps, or is there a better way?
The only controller for the fan is that it’s plugged into the timer I have my lights on, so it shuts off for 6 hours. I can vary the level it’s at too, but it doesn’t react based on the conditions.
Update: I doubted this little dehumidifier, but it got the humidity down to 52% in the tent. Still unsure, I gotta read more up on dehumidifiers to see if I’ll get a bigger one. It’s doing very well now but maybe it won’t be enough during flower as some have suggested.
Inline pulls air through bringing cooler dryer air into the tent as its pulling hot air out of the top of the tent.
Smell doesnt happen till flowering at which time you will need to close those off, this combined with the filter will reduce the amount of cooling the fans can do but also eliminates odor. Every aspect of controling your environment is a push and pull kinda deal. Closeing the flaps contains the smell (push) but also reduces the ability of the fan to cool the tent (pull)
I made a youtube video for you because its alot to type…
That might be true for some but you happen to be in the best place to learn to grow cannabis that exists. This was my belief too when I started.
This is my first journal, as you will see I did the opposite of kill plants. All because of this place.
See above video
Better on.all the time them shut off for extended period.
You will really want one if these. Temp and humidity controll the fan. While not NECESSSARY enviromental control is a contributing factor to harvest size and quality.
Super appreciate all the information. Taking note and will keep this post updated with my progress
You are most welcome my new friend. Happy to help. We gotta keep homegrown alive and free, this is the way.
Any idea what pest causes this? Found it a week ago. They were pretty small so hard to tell, but they looked like tiny orange/tan grubs I guess. May not be accurate description though. If you do know, how is it dealt with?
Got a pic? If not google common cannabis pests and see if you can ID the bug.
perfect example of temp humidity control…words to live by
Should’ve taken a pic of them but crushed them instead… will do though
Update: plants are looking much better. I didn’t realize I had way too little light at first, but now that that issue is corrected, the plants generally look much better. They stretched a little but seem to now be growing into their height and putting on foliage. I do have some brown spots on one of the indoor plants though, and some yellow spots on one of my outdoor plants. Was wondering if anyone can help diagnose. I’m trying to diagnose but there’s so much info online. Are the brown spots leaf septoria? Any help would be appreciated.
I dont think. Its leaf septoria. Not as common as the web makes it seems. It is an outdoor thing but I just dont think its that.
It looks a little like bug damage in the second image. Is this webbing between the two leaves?
Give a good look with your hewlers loop on the undersides of the leaves.
The first image looks more like maybe dribbled some nute solution or something like that on the leaf, that happened that you can think of?
Calmag def usually starts smaller and on the tip and margins first.
I’m honestly not sure on either plants but they both look relatively healthy. The indoor ones with the brown spots is looking better in terms of the new foliage. I didn’t really see any critters so could’ve just been nutrient splash on the leaves. I’m letting them ride for now and monitoring them closely.
Started feeding 1 tsp/gallon of my nutrients. Plants are still smaller than they should be for their age I think, but otherwise they look healthy for the most part. Stems are thickening into some mini-trunks, leaves look happy I believe.
