I have 12 hydroponic grows so far and I’ve been able to overcome issues in the past, but this one has me scratching my bald head… I moved my LSD, Moby Dick, and Maui Wowie into my big tank to start the veg cycle yesterday. This morning the Maui Wowie was wilted and the other two are fine. I had net pots plug up in the past when they become choked with roots, but that took days before the plants would list over. I don’t top water feed and there is 5cm air space under the pot.
My hydroponic system is 85L, HLG600 R-spec, 45LPM aerator with 10cm diameter air stones under each plant and one in the res. I pump 1325liters per hour through my system and I don’t top water feed. The DLI (18hour) reading at all three plants was 24 yesterday. I have a Milwaukee MC122 pH controller and a MC810 dosing pump set to 5.7. I did move the setting to dose at 6.0 this morning. It was something I’ve been meaning to do for a while and never got around to it.
I noticed these plants are light feeders compared to my last grow of Purple Punch, Power Plant, and Critical Mass. I had to dump the first Nutrient batch identified as WC0418 and marked as (S-1) because it was too strong. The second one (S-2) worked fine. I attached all of the grow data from seed to now for reference.
Severe guarding and incipient N toxicity. It looks like a root issue to me.
What is your rez temp and how strong is your nutrient solution? Also, what are you using?
Res temp was 21.6C this morning. EC was 1.2 yesterday, and 1.
5 this morning. I was expecting the EC would raise to 1.3, and not 1.5. I added 8 liters of water to dilute and raised the pH to 6.0 this morning.
What nutrient line?
GH is what I used. the list of nutrients is on the last picture with the V-1. I calculated the PPM value as 342ppms. The starting EC was 0.6, and EC measured was 1.2 after I mixed up the nutes.
Rez temp is a bit high but not bad. EC of your nutes is on par with GH grow schedule. If roots aren’t slimy and smelly i don’t know.
Plant looks better today. Yesterday I added 8 liters of water and today the pH was 5.9, air temp 22.5C, water temp 21.3, EC 1.4 and RH 50%. I added another 10 liters of water today leaving 2cm below the net pot. I’m thinking this Maui Wowie is a very lite feeder, so I’m trying to get the EC down to 1.3.
You need 3 inches below net pot , 5 would be even better…
She looks like she is drowning…
What size air stones and how big of air pump for all plants running off of pump…?
Lower water level to 3 inches below net cup and as she gets older , make it 5 inches of air gap , if possible…

That’s what I thought too that she was drowning. But the main stem is not leaning over like I normally see in drowning. I don’t top water feed and the net pot was actually 1cm under water during seedling stage. No Rockwool, I plant her high in the pot directly in the clay. Tomorrow I will remove 10 liters to increase the head space under the pot. If the EC is still over 1.3, I will remove 20 liters and add 10 liters of water back in keeping a 5cm head space under the pot. I don’t like doing two things in the same day because then you really don’t know what the problem was.
I have 10cm diameter air stones under each plant and one in the res pumping 45liters per minute. I just noticed the Moby Dick is starting to show signs of Nute. toxicity with yellow leaf tips, so I need to get the EC down. The LSD is doing really well.
Thanks for the help.
The guarding is indicative of a root issue. Plant color tells me I’d bump the EC up to 1.8 to 2.0, frankly. Definitely do as the 'Fuzz suggested.
So I went back in my room to take a picture of the burned plant and noticed my HLG600 Rspec was flickering on and off. I bought it three years ago as a refurbished light. I contacted them to see if it can be repaired.
@peachfuzz @myfriendis410 I pulled out enough water to get back to the 5cm head space I’ve maintained throughout my grows. The roots are white, just a little stained by the recharge I use. I will hold the EC at 1.4 and see how they respond and just do a nute change this weekend.
As far as the HLG600Rspec, I always set DLI 18H at 25 for first week of veg which I got from a chart on this website. I vent my mushroom tent into my grow room for all that CO2! When the light flickers, and then dims to a steady DLI 18H =5.7 and remains there for several hours, and then intermittently goes back to 25 and steady for a period of time. I contacted HLG this morning and they said this problem is caused by a failed potentiometer. The Technician told me how to disconnect the pot and the light will run at full power. He dropped a replacement pot in the mail for free and it will be here on Wednesday. What a great company! Light problem solved.
The Maui Wowie and Moby Dick grew 2cm in three days and the LSD grew 6cm. I think the growth was in the last day and a half.
Morning readings are:
pH=6.0 EC=1.4, Air Temp=23.9, Water temp = 21.1, RH=46%.
The leaf stems on the Maui Wowie this morning was NOT wilted but stiff like a healthy leaf stem.
This problem must have just started on this grow. Two weeks ago, I harvested 667grams of very sticky buds and 156gram of trim off of a Purple Punch, Power Plant, and Critical Mass.
Do you think this problem could have been caused by the light dimming to DLI of 5.7 for extended periods of time? I hope this doesn’t force the plants into flower.
