So Professor Kat, question on worms if I may: my compost bins are loaded with worms but they’re Earth worms not red wigglers. I loaded my 20 gal grow bags with some of these worms and added an avocado to each bag but I’m not seeing any sign of interest in the avacado and now they are really starting to rot. I’m growing outdoors in a greenhouse, all organic living soil. Do you think I should get some red wigglers and fresh
avocado?
I have just started to make my own soil as well and mostly cuz of this post. I have found out big warms dont like little spaces, they travel to much. Red wigglers are the right worms to use.
I have not used big worms at all so have no experience with them. I use red wigglers and actually have 2 bins setup in my basement to grow them. They get all my vegetable and fruit scraps other than citrus I do give them some pineapple at times. So yes get some wigglers your earthworms are deep travelers where as the red wigglers like it closer to the surface. Banana peel used tea leaves, coffee grounds are all good to feed them too. It’s actually kind of funny. I spend as much time prepping food for the worms as I do to feed myself
So to answer your question I would say definitely get some wigglers. Your girls will thank youThat’s for sure lol
I have my wife helping me save all of our food scraps for compost, and shes a big french press coffee drinker, so we get lots of nice grounds, but she just does not want me farming worms inside. I told her how much I want to and how they would die if we did it outside, at least in the winter. She just doesnt like the idea of worms in our home. Hopefully I can bring her around by next winter.
I promise they don’t get far if they do get out they dry up real fast and have no odor at all. Grow a crop totally organic and just experience the difference in taste and smell and IMO potency and she will learn to love them to haha
I never heard of a dirt chef before but it’s obviously a thing .
" Damn your food taste like dirt".
“Oh sorry wrong dish”
Dirt chef… I like that
Worms are cool, thanx for the feedback. Ordering some red wigglers today to get me started. Gonna’ need to learn how to take care of them before starting my own worm farm. And I was all proud of myself for getting this years grow started on the cheap. Can you point me in the right direction to start learning.
That direction ^^^^^^. OR.

Just start reading threads and reading and reading for me anyway, oh and I asked a lot of questions.
Do you have the book by the Rev True Living Organics? If ya do there is a short section on soil amendments for growing worms. There real simple to care from my experience. Quick Google search has tons of great info on them. You don’t need a bunch of store bought stuff for em just save your vegetable and fruit scraps and feed em that. Easy on the citrus they say the acid can be a little ruff on em. I start mine in coconut coir and they love it.
Hello everyone! Great site tons of info… Im just retired, just started to partake after years of not. Bought a 4x4x80 grow tent. Got the exlenvce 1200, 6inch filter, duct and fan. Making soil as we speak. I will keep a couple inside and couple out
That’s One of the books he recommended that got me going… Lol
You had me at “I Grow”
Thanks for your help Professor Kat. Always thought worms were worms. Ordered the book and right now I’m in the middle of Teaming With Microbes. I like getting into the compost bins and checking on the worms. Biggest issue I need to figure out is how to keep a worm farm from overheating. Summer can get very hot here. Like QueencityB my bride (married 46 years) would kill me if I brought worms into the house. Meanwhile, my organic grow is doing very well.
Did my first fim Friday. That was scary but plants didn’t seem to mind at all.
