My First Indoor Grow Start to Finish

Don’t use this whole design because I would do it differently next time

Mainly just to show the connection between the tanks

On that one I have a 1080 gph pump that pulls from the tanks and flows back into the reservoir.

Under current system

Then a drip ring system to keep sprouts and promote root growth to the tanks

Sounds like you have a pretty solid plan. I dont think cleaning or even swapping plants from tote to tote is even required. The plants wont be alive long enough for that to become an issue. Draining is simply a matter of rotating the drain tube and having a basin to catch what comes out. Obviously this requires an elevated bucket!
Now Im of the camp that believes fertilizer should not be poured down the drain! For obvious reasons! Fresh water is a precious commodity. If you have a garden or a large tree near your home, take the extra time to feed them by spreading it around a bit. Soil is a great cleaner! If you live on septic, dont pour used solution in your field! It will ultimately be a bad thing.
You need the buckets/ totes to grow in, 1 spare just in case! You need a 5 gallon pail to mix in and 1 to put the waste in. Keep it simple, start clean and there will be no need to clean mid way. When you are done with the grow clean everything really well.

I drilled a small hole in the side close to the top of my bucket. I wouldnt put the air hose in the drain line, that will make draining an ass pain!

Those will work fine to grow in. Look @Grandaddy013 ‘s setup.

As far as air line in. You can use the top of the tote to make 1/4 holes for input of airline. Feed thru then put stones at base.

As long as light cant enter and it wont rust, you can use glass or plastic, any shape you want. The square plastic pails are nice for bulkheads because the surfacenis flat. You can get those buckets free from bakeries, wineries and restaurants. If you get white ones they will require spray paint or wrapping to keep light out. You can save additional money but screening gravel instead of expanded clay or hydroton. The plant doesnt really care about what holds it up. Ideally ph neutral but whatever. You can do hydro for super cheap, the most expensive parts ar the 4 outlet air pump, and the fertilizer. You add to the cost by adding bulkhead fittings, some tubing and 90s and a liquid pump. In any case. Once you get set up, its amazing how well it works. Honestly, I personally think its easier in many respects to soiless.

Honestly, if you arent in a huge hurry check delis, restraunts, bakeries !!! Espectially bakeries for the square ones! They get lard and oils and other stuff in them. They will be free! Some even black! Or red whi h works too. The only downside is the net pots need to be cut into the lid or a new lid with plywood and paint needs to be made. Pre made buckets are pricey but convenient. Personally id use the square ones because they can be bulkheaded easier.

The damn roots grow so fast! They plug everything up, no room for solution. I would highly recommend as big a reservoir as a grow room can use… keeps solution stable. You can leave for a few days without worry, especially if you have wireless alarms!

I would grow 1 big one in a 5x5 but 2 would be great too. If you wanted to grow 4 in there you could but it would be tight.
1 big one would gove a 4x4 scrog with good circulation around it.
1 pound a plant!
