My super sweet husband just added fresh manure into my weed pots! I haven’t planted in them yet (yes I’m super late to the game but live in south Texas so I’ll get them going as soon as my seeds arrive next week and hopefully be okay.) I do not have any more soil to dump it all and start over. I don’t think he mixed it very well so I’m going to wait till he’s at work and scrape off the top layer of soil to remove as much as I can. He’s sensitive so I don’t want him to know he messed up my jam.
What else should I do? Flush it with water or something? I don’t want to burn my babies!! Google wasn’t helpful.
I’ve heard fresh manure that hasn’t fully broken down can leech the nitrogen from the soil until it breaks down , but what I think you should do is get some solo cups grab as clean of soil as you can and start your seeds in those that ll buy you an extra 1-1.5 weeks until you have to transplant in which time your plants will be hardier to nute burn and hopefully the manure is broken down. Also look into getting an xtreme gardening sample pack they come with azos and makes which is excellent to put in the plug during transplant
What type of fresh manure?
Goat and rabbit you can use fresh
Horse and cow needs leeched and bleached(sunlight) a couple weeks
Chicken needs leeched alot, couple months usually, it’s really “hot”
Did he place the cow turd on the soil or did he blend it in? If he just put a layer on then no biggie, you can just move the turd out of the way and plant. Depending on how much turd he put in the soil, it may not be a big deal. If the turd is well composted it will be beneficial and of no concern at all. Most of the farmers in the old world use dung to fertilize all their crops.
I tend to shy away from chicken and cow. Chicken tends to be best used as an activator for compost piles, too hot for soil. Cow is full of weeds. The best is lama or alpaca if you have access to it.
@Cannabian It looks like he attempted to blend it in to the top couple inches. It’s bright green so easy to see compared to my soil. I dug out everything I could see and then turned soil to mix in the bits I didn’t see. Looks like he didn’t put a lot… maybe a cup in each 15 gallon planter.
Shouldnt be an issue, just dont plant a seedling directly into it… let it get at least 3 sets of true leaves in a solo cup or similar container… then transplant. Babies are very sensitive to hot soil. That doesn’t mean dont germinate outside, just do it in gentle soil first then introduce it to more POWER!
Just in case he tries to get creative with your veggies next you might remind him that cow poo needs to compost to kill pathogens before you put it anywhere near any plants producing food you will eat. Nobody wants e.coli
@Deez Definitely worth a reminder. We have a compost and put our chicken poop in there and we’ve never added cow patties into the garden beds before. Idk what happened. The guy went rouge.
