Let's talk DIY lights

What’s up my dude! Definitely wasn’t expecting to log in and see you posting.

Made this light from 100w house light bulbs using daylight and soft white bulbs. My question is do these bulbs have the right spectrum for growing :seedling:

I was looking at this 2 weeks ago but you never answered my question.

To know for certain you would need a Spectrometer something like this. Very expensive for 1 or 2 off use.
OHSP350P_
Or do a complete run of plants to get a feel of what it does.It may be perfect for veg but not flowering.
What is the wattage going into your fixture?

Don’t know what cct and cri are. These bulbs are GE basic 100w.( got them from lowes ) Says 13.5w power draw 5000k and 2700k. That’s 216w per light 432 total. I just don’t know what the spectrum of these bulbs are. I only have about 100$ invested in them and I’m wondering if I should have just invested my money in a led grow light.

5000k and 2700k are the cct. The color rendering index should have been printed on box as well. In this case 90+ cri would be superior to 80cri. But they should be fine either way.

I run a homemade light to boost during flower. Does removing the globes change the color spectrum?

Probably varies some from light to light, but not a lot unless it is specifically filtered globe.

Thank you, I have always wondered but couldn’t ever find any information on it

Hey @dbrn32 can you tell me best driver for 6 of the BXEB-L1120Z-30E4000-C-B3 strips. My brain isn’t working right to do the math. I’m thinking about swapping out some fluorescent lights with them.

6 will be tough to do in series at high power. If you want to run at 700ma, hlg-185-c700a or b would do 7. If you want to run in parallel it could probably be arranged all the way up to max power. Or go with two drivers in series.

That works. I am just tired of changing bulbs and one has a bad driver. I can work with 7 so that’s what I’ll do. Thank you!

That is up to 7 too. Any number of 1120mm eb2 between 4 and 7 you should be good to go.

@dbrn32 and/or anyone…its time to start garden veggies in doors and wondering if a blurple 180tw light is any good for vegging veggies? It has 2 switches and I’m thinking just the veg would be enough without the flower one on. Or better off going with a 4’ double shop light with florescent bulbs? If the shop lights better then cool white or daylight bulbs? I’ve heard cool whites work fine. TIA

Either would likely do what you need. I think would depend on how many trays you plan on using.

I do this every year with an old China light. Built a little box out of Styrofoam (@Not2SureYet used a Sterilite clear tote) just for the purpose.

Bravo
I got started here after rehabbing my Phototron from 1981 or 1982. Also got a huge bit of support from @monkman another Phototron alumni.

I never thought I’d see SO many states go legal as we have right now but I knew it would happen eventually.

I joined NORML at inception and even wrote my Congress person asking him to support decriminalization back in ‘76 while active duty USMC air wing. I had his reply letter proudly taped inside my wall locker from El Toro to Okinawa and back. It’s a great thing to see and be a small part of. Just my 2 cents…

But back to the Phototron…
I had lots of flaking of the reflective interior coating and started there. Lots of elbow grease and soap and water got them cleaned and redone with film from Amazon for around 35$.

The lights all worked right outta storage and I even rehabbed my feed a Tron which I really loved.

I started some ILGM seeds in sphagnum moss and micorrizae as close to Dr DeMarco’s method as I could approximate but had numerous visits from fungus gnats due to the constantly wet medium so I switched to Fox Farm potting soil thanks to @Hellraiser’s grow journal.

Then I got the LED bug and @dbrn32 held my hand through my first veg light build and I’m still at it. I built a second light on my own with 4qb120’s on the corners and 2 qb288 v2 rspec boards in the middle (my flower light) and it’s looking like I may add the 288’s to my original veg light just in case I need to finish both tents quickly. The 288’s are on their own driver so I can use them if I need/want but the 4 qb 120’s do a fine job as well.

I have made lots of mistakes but got lucky with the support here without a doubt. Always a safe place to own your shame and move on…lol

I just chopped my first grow indoors in over 30 years as well. Not a huge yield but considering my mistakes I’m grateful.

Bergman’s Gold leaf was a remarkably resilient plant and it was the first to show signs of dehydration every week (had 3 plants) I also had Pure Indica Bubba Kush Grand Daddy Purple and DoSiDo. Have just chopped the last of them and they are hanging to dry. I hated to do it. I think I flipped the lights December 1 2020 (like 12 weeks in flower) but they were rootbound in 3 gallon plastic pots when I flipped the light so they lost a good 2 weeks I’m guessing. Put the Indica BK and GDP in 10 gallon fabric pots at re potting (ran out of 7 gallon) and I think that’s why they continued to flower pretty well. I watched the trichomes but eventually decided when to chop based upon the overall health of each plant and the new pistils or lack thereof.

Right now I’ve got 6 GDP clones (easiest plant to root of all I had) in 7 gallon phat sacks in FFHF. Flipped the light March 10 and I’m using up the last of my AN connoisseur nutrients. I ordered some Jacks 321 after seeing the great results @Hellraiser and @MattyBear are getting
Ordered some DaKine Atomic Root Powder to do a flush or 2 before going over to Jack’s. It’s probably not a big deal but I’m hoping I can see what the GDP produces under better conditions.

I’m definitely making changes soon as to air quality as well. I know that’s one variable I’d not given enough attention. I’ve got the 6” infinity’s with Hepa filters running out but definitely need to source better inflow. Also killing my back watering cloth grow sacks to runoff; using a combo of garden sprayer and then long neck watering can.

Six plants in a 4x4 is a full time job!!! I just hope they stay healthy and stretch like @MattyBear’s

The dude abides

So I have a question about light ,not diy lights tho…The light emitted from a glowing heater, referring to the orange glow coming off the elements or wires or whatever…is that enough to cause herm?
