Let's talk DIY lights

You can only wire the proposed strip in parallel on that driver. If you want to run them at 1400ma that would be like 6 strips.

Not sure. I would probably keep all the same cct in either 4000k or 5000k, whichever was cheaper. Then figure out what I would need for each and see how much each option costs.

My setup is a HLG-120H-C700B‎ driver and 10 Bridgelux EB Series Gen 2 --(BXEB-L0560Z-35E2000-C-B3) Pulling 154 watts at the wall, wired in Series.
I think my driver is on it’s last legs. Is there another driver that would increase my watts at the wall with the same Bridgelux strips? This is a build that you help me build one year ago. @dbrn32

Why do you feel your driver is having problems? I’m sure we could come up with something, but may not be necessary.

My input voltage is constant at 120 but the output varies from 65 to 140 volts ( up and down constant) taken with a volt meter and Kill a watt meter. This started this week but has been working steady for a year

I have solved the problem, I disconnected the photometer from the driver and my watts went back up to 154 wall watts.I will replace the photometer.

Could you recommend another driver that would increase my wall watts using the same 10 Bridgelux EB Series Gen 2 --(BXEB-L0560Z-35E2000-C-B3) wired in Series, or is this the best setup?

What is your take on adding red or far red during flowering?

I would think that a Hlg-150 would be your best bet. Since each strip is about 14w i think. Only thing i would wonder is if a 1050 would be better then a 700 since its rated for 700-1400 but thats a question for Mr. Efficiency him self.

Glad you have that fixed. Why are you so concerned about your wall watts? You have a nicely built light, raising current will just get you more heat and less efficient.

The eb’s run really good 700ma. They could be run at 1050ma, but not a very good driver available for his application. Would have to go all the way up to hlg-240.

If the light isn’t big enough, it makes more sense to just build a bigger or additional light.

I tried looking through the thread for COB info. There’s so much, but it’s from 2017, which is ancient history in LED tech apparently.

I found these:

https://www.amazon.com/CANAGROW-Spectrum-380nm-780nm-Integrated-Driver/dp/B07FVP9B1H

They are shockingly cheap. I wonder if it’s worth building an array of these run at a lower voltage in a fanless setup. I can’t tell enough about them, but I almost want to order a couple to test.

I don’t need a light immediately, so I’m fine laying out a couple bucks to find the failure modes. But not if they’re garbage to begin with. Thoughts?

@KeystoneCops long story short, another member has already attempted, and they’re not worth it. @OldSkunk

I figured. I’ll either buy an HLG kit or a preassembled light others are demonstrating success with.

Yup, skgrower struggled with them and ultimately wound up building with citizen cobs. You can usually find reasonable pricing on them at cobkits.

I’m leaning toward a pcb strip style light with a relatively big spread, but stumbled across those cheap COBs on Amazon.

Ultimately, I’ll determine my build based on how my state legalizes; To me it depends on whether we are restricted by plant count or square footage.

Yea 700 is what i nornally see most the builds at for those that ive seen. I just noticed on spec sheet they can go up to 1400 but doesnt mean they run good like that.

Thanks for the insight, The light has worked great for 6 runs with low heat and great dense buds just seeing
if there was something better.

What is current status there? I don’t know where you’re at, so obviously difficult to know what laws are or projected to be. Decriminalization or even a recreational use bill don’t always mean cultivation are included.

Usually helps, but not to the extent you’re going to double your harvest or anything like that.

I’m in Connecticut with a medical qualification.

The legislature tried twice over 2 years to reach an agreement on legalization for recreational cannabis. They failed both times, voting basically on party lines. The governor stated last month that he wants to pursue legalization in the next legislative session, so the issue isn’t dead.

The progressive caucus wants home cultivation and restorative justice measures as part of any recreational bill. I don’t know what the opposition wants; whether they want to block certain aspects, or legalization all together.

I’m in favor of a square footage limit rather than plant count, but I’ll settle for any measure that let’s me grow my own without losing my house.

The money behind the medical cultivators is interested in fighting homegrows, but they want a rec market. The 4 initial cultivators all sold to conglomerates for more than $50mil each.

Cultivation penalties are pretty stiff there. I asked because my state passed recreational bill that will go into effect January 1. The bill doesn’t allow for home cultivation though. It did as written, but was one of a couple things removed in order to get the bill to pass. For what it’s worth, extremely blue state.
