Let's modify a Biorb to grow some plants!

A Biorb is a great marketing company who sells aquariums, very aesthetically pleasing ones I think.
So always wanting a nice fish tank like the rich people on tv I bought a small one for a single small fish because my girlfriend wouldn’t stop about wanting a beta.
Oh who’s kidding I knew if I bought a small one and got into it I can slowly grow this hobby into something I enjoy and spend my energy on earth learning about and appreciating…like cannabis growing lol (over 10k later probably lol)

So here is Bossman’s brother who is on TV we say (because bossman watches him like a 2nd TV with the windows being his first)
Meet Rocket (like an American red white and blue theme, even though I’m not American, he also darts around like a little rocket. Finally we have learned over time he is as aggressive as blowing a rocket up on anyone we put in his tank to even a snail

RIP
Turbo (zebra snail #1 the OG)

Rocket has also claimed the lives of 6 yellow dwarf shrimp… It took him a week but he did it, not enough coverage in our tank we Geuss and it’s to small (like fighting a war and learning how to fight a war with your children’s lives it’s actually sad even though we really tried and did research)

So bossman’s been giving him some of his own terror in return at times but not often anymore as they have learned to be intrigued by each other than the whole fish/cat thing)

Anyways these Biorbs have a strip of those LED RBG strips in them, also wired to their air pump into a 110v block.

My fish group is saying I need to get a bigger tank and better lighting Wich I can understand but I can’t get a bigger tank for a while because this one fits, it’s already a decent investment, we don’t need alot of fish.
However lighting maybe we can do.

@dbrn32 and all the other people that have done DIY builds understands what’s out there etc please chime in.
The lighting requirements are very very minimal so I Geuss I need some pretty weak light they told me to get a this and put it in a lamp beside it should do the trick but I want to fix this the right way.

Geuss I shiuld find the Wattage or amperage on the current lights tomorrow if possible.
That being said close to or double this 14 PPFD lol should be fine.

Facts are
Has doesn’t have to be water proof, sits outside the whole, under a top lid/skirt.
Unaware of the Wattage
Can I keep it wired to the same plug running more wires is not ideal visually for a fish tank but I could do it and put some conduit on the wires I Geuss.

The lighting requirements for the plants in here won’t be anything like cannabis and we don’t have room for a dimmer I don’t think as well as can’t raise or lower lights.
I’m going to take it apart tomorrow and I’ll update on the exact wiring with pictures.

Thoughts until then are appreciated

Messaged the manufacturer, I’ll see what the current specs are for the lighting strip as well as the ac/DC converter (as it runs their air pup to and is a proprietary connection, smart buisness wise if they would have design the lights properly or if someone wanted to do this but didn’t mind more wires…

You only have the one Siamese fighting fish is what we call them here in Australia there not really good with other fish thats not saying u cant put other fish with it ,you wouldnt put another male in the tank cause they would fight to the death however u can get a female fighting fish and put it in

Put a mirror in front of it and watch it get mad at itself.

Yah they will get mad and it will try to kill the fish in the mirror but it will only kill its self trying to do so

Do you know that i built an aquarium light prior to ever building a grow light? Unfortunately it was for a friend, and he did all of the research. Im prettu sure he copied a diy build he found on coral growing forum and we made a few minor tweaks.

I’m currently doing double duty at work right now. I should climb a rung in corporate ladder by sometime in April, then hiring a replacement and getting up to speed will probably have me pretty tied up for a while. So i don’t have a lot of time to help in research department. But i’m confident if you troll around aquarium forums you can find things like recommended power level and color combination ratios. If you do this, i would be happy to help find components and get it put together. I think rapid led and steves leds both cater to the aquarium crowd too, so may be worth checking out.

Thanks, i think haha! I have sluffed on opportunities in the past due to a number of reasons, but my current position is definitely not one most retire from.

Thnx man I will, I just started to learn discord and hopped on there but I will search forums to because discord is a learning curve for me.

Also Congrats, I’m doing the same.
I just created a new limited company and am stepping into safety now with this company should take a year.
We gotta climb to retire so true.

Your orb is super small so 2inches of fish per gallon and I’m guessing your maxed out. It looks like you only have plants in there so 5watts per gallon will do. I’ll drop a pic of what I think would be ideal.
Haven’t done aquariums in a bit but was my first hobby… this is my second. I’ll post a pic of my last aquarium before I took it apart.

Btw beta fish are mud puddle fish you could grab a plain fish bowl and let him live alone. Build your small tank around invertebrates and maybe 3 neon tetras. I remember briefly speaking in the past. I know the beta is something you want to keep but you won’t be super successful if your beta is aggressive with added anything else. Planted tanks do better with biodiversity IMO.
Too bad your not in upstate NY I have like 25 different set ups I’d let ya pic one…lol I lost interest a few years ago

Wow dang you and me did the hobbies the other way haha, yeah the girl loves the betta.

The orb makes lights challenging, pretty much can’t put anything in it…

Couldn’t you do a retrofit. I did a quick search and saw several options. However they do sell an upgraded light for the bio orb

Get a Dremel and cut all that out of there. can retro fit just about any board with in dimensions. Use a 2 part glue to place it.
