Jza444's First Indoor Soil Grow

@merlin44

Thank you. That would be great if you don’t mind. The setup looked really efficient.

@Jza444 I did not glue any of the pipe joints. At harvest, I just remove the strings and disassemble the frame from around the plant. The door to my grow room is too narrow for the frame to go through.

Thanks for the shoutout @PurpNGold74

Nice. Thanks for the info. I think something like that would definitely be of great benefit. Appreciated.

Some pretty useful posts in here. A good reference for any grow journal.

So…my pH runoff numbers were all over the place today. Kind of odd, so I’m gonna purchase an Apera pH meter to test it against my cheap model. The cheap model was recently calibrated, so I’m not sure what’s up.

My slurry tests from last night were fine:

Bloodstar alpha slurry ppm: 986
Bloodstar alpha slurry pH: 6.22

Cherry Pie slurry ppm: 1111
Cherry Pie slurry pH: 6.44

But my runoff pH on today’s watering was all over the place:

Water/nute pH in today: 6.22
Water/nute ppm in today: 440

pH runoff for plants:

Bloodstar alpha: 7.1
Bloodstar beta: 6.9
Cherry Pie: 5.96
PGSC: 5.7
Glueberry alpha: 5.7
Glueberry beta: 5.8

Something doesn’t add up. They were all between 6.35-6.7 pH last week when I tested runoff. They have all been given the same nutrients/soil/water. I have an Apera on the way. Hopefully that clarifies this problem. Plants look fine. No sign of nutrient lockout.

On a good note, the 1700+ ppm from last week came down below 1000 on all but 2 plants, and those were around 1100. I’d consider this a win without having to sledge. No sign of nutrient burn or abundance, but I will not be using nutes again until the first week of flower. I will be flushing at the end of next week anyway, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Nicely done. Id fault the cheap pH meter myself… those fluctuations are wonky. Solid news on the ppms tho. If u get down around 6-700 a little bump more wouldnt hurt

Yeah, trying to go lower on the ppms. It was around 1700 last week, so it’s definitely moving in the right direction. I’m not too worried about the pH numbers being off. I was digging around and just found an old pH meter. I tested the runoff, and everything was between 6-7. Looks like I’ll be purchasing that Apera today.

Got the shirts in today. Thanks ILGM! The material feels nice and the print looks durable and bright. Very happy with my purchase.

@Hungrybud Here is a tag shot. It appears the material is sourced in the US, then manufactured in Nicaragua.

Hey, looking like you got ahead of the nutrient issue. I looked at your numbers and I don’t really see anything that needs concern. You are documenting and watching for trends so taking good data is key; I applaud (and use) the Apera.

Thanks for checking everything out. Appreciated. I just ordered an HLG 260W XL rspec kit today. I plan on picking up a 320W XL rspec kit at the end of the month. Should be more than enough to finish flowering in my 5x5. The flowering area might work out to be closer to 4x4 if I can keep everything pinched in. Also, I’ll probably only be flowering four plants, five at most.

Since I’ll have room on the heatsink for a third fixture on the 260W XL, would it be possible down the road to just add a fixture? I’d just replace the Meanwell 260 watt LED driver with a 320-400 watt LED driver, essentially making it a 320-400 watt kit? I just didn’t have $500 to blow today, and needed at least 1 rspec kit very soon. $369 was a much softer blow to the wallet. Also, if I’m not running grows simultaneously, could I just buy v2 4000k fixtures from HLG, then swap them with the rspecs for vegging?

That’s possible although the one to ask for sure is @dbrn32. He’s been working lots of hours so be patient.

I like the idea of having 4,000 K veg lights and likely the two would be enough for a lot of the veg cycle. (plants are small and crowded together)

Thanks for the reply. I’m just trying to get an idea of what is possible. Yeah, I figured I could just use that 260W XL rspec kit, and throw a couple 4000k in when starting a new veg. Seems it would work. All the information is appreciated from both of you. dbrn has been really helpful with the lighting advice. No worries on timing. If I’m anything, I’m extremely patient. If he gets time, any advice would be appreciated.

You could do that. I would seriously look at costs though. Three of the 260xl kits would provide a lot more balanced par intensity levels. And buying the way you described probably isn’t all that much cheaper. I’m calculating roughly $1020 plus any applicable tax and shipping charges to do the way you said. And about $90 more to just buy three 260xl kits.

That does make more sense on a few different levels. Those things are really bright, so having three sets spread out would do me just fine (like you told me to do a while ago). Thanks for the info on that. I heard you’ve been working a ton, appreciate you taking the time. One more thing. Could I just buy a couple 4000k QBs and swap them in one of my 260W XL rspec frames for veg.

I commented in other thread on that. You can, but take a look at my other post.

No worries. I had just finished a couple min prior.

Sorry in advance for the blurps. HLGs are tracked and will be here on Saturday. Should fix that issue. Gotta set that new flower area up asap. Ladies are pushing 16 inches and I’d like to set some type of scrog at around 20-22 inches. I don’t have enough time to set up the trademarked Merlin scrogs, but those are absolutely in the works for the next grow. Much love on that idea. I’m building 5 drainage bracers with drip pans tomorrow, setting up the exhaust ducting into garage attic, and blacking out the entire garage. Long day ahead of me, but the thought of not having to go to the dispensary and drop $$$ every month, makes it really easy.

From rags:

To riches:

Gonna try to eventually flower 5. The Bloodstar runt will be gifted. No matter how this plays out, I appreciate the wealth of knowledge everyone has imparted to me in only a few short weeks. Thanks a bunch. Even if I end up flopping this grow, I’ll be much more prepared for the next.
