I think I royally screwed the pooch

First thing to be said, don’t get frustrated, don’t hurry through something without thinking logically about it, don’t be afraid to admit and own your mistakes. Share your knowledge, your successes and your failures.

Those of you that have followed some of my other posts know that I am growing outdoors in SoCal using different grow mediums. Hydroponics, soil in pots, and in the garden ground. This relates to the hydroponics portion. I recently upsized from 5-gallon buckets to 30-gallon Costco totes because the weather has been warm, the girls are getting huge, and I was having to water/nutrients/PH twice a day due to how much they were drinking. The buckets only held about 2 gallons of water because of the 6-inch netpot size and leaving an air gap for the roots, even with airstones. I have had a hard time chasing PH in the 30 -gallon totes with that volume of water, about 20-gallons, leaving air gap, etc. I like to be in the 5.8-6.4 range. My tap water comes in at about 9 PH as I have a whole house salt water softner and a whole house filter. So I fill another tote with tap water using an airstone for 24-48 hours for degassing, chlorine, etc.. Switched out the reservoir waters on my two plants yesterday, added my Masterblend to 1000 ppm, 2.0 EC knowing that as I bring the PH down, those will both go up to the Masterblend recommended levels. 1200ppm, 2.4 EC. I’ve done this a dozen times before.

Enter the pooch. I’m unknowingly out of GH PH down. I have used lemons from my tree before in an emergency such as this. I even posted about it here in the forums. Someone said something about not to do it, adds organics, could be detrimental, etc. I didn’t want to leave them in a 9 PH solution, so I searched the forums. You know what else was recommended??? Vinegar. Easy enough, I have a fresh gallon in the house. So I grabbed it and started adding a little at a time. Went from 9 to 8.5 pretty quick. Then it started slowing down. I kept adding just a little at a time and waiting, retesting. Before I knew it, I had used 1/2 gallon in each tote to get it to 6.8. Still too high for me, but good enough to wait for my Amazon delivery of my new GH PH Down bottle today. Got up this morning and both my plants look like they have been on a drug, alcohol, and hooker filled weekend in Vegas. Wilted AF, looking so bad it hurt me to even visualize them in that state. I run outside at 6:30am, rip the tops of the totes off, and there is just nasty foam and what looks like an oil slick in both of them. I’m standing there, sans coffee yet, and I’m thinking WTF? As the gears in my mind slowly start going over what happened, I suddenly realized VINEGAR IS A WEED KILLER! WTF did I just do? Pulled both plants out of the totes, put them in fresh 5-gallon buckets to rinse. Used hydrogen peroxide to scrub every inch of the totes, lids, and airstones. Rinsed each rootball in about 30 gallons of fresh water from the hose, screw PH now. Filled tubs, added nutes, got my Amazon delivery thankfully, overnight AM selected, got the PH down to 6 and put them back in the new nutrient solutions. They still look terrible tonight, don’t know if they will recover. I’ll take and post pictures tomorrow as it is dark now. Went to the bar and drowned my sorrows in some Lalo tequila and Modello beers. I CAN’T believe that I didn’t think about the vinegar that way, I use it all the time around the property to kill weeds in a spray bottle. I was so focused on PH, I got tunnel vision about what I was doing and its possible effects. Never had that happen with lemon juice or citric acid. So, boys and girls, learn from this lunkheads mistakes. Pay attention, don’t lose focus, be patient. Or, don’t F*&# this up!

Rant over, I’ll go back to crying in the corner and banging my head repeatedly. Thanks.

Not sure how your water is setup but there is usually a line left untreated when softeners are installed. In this house my hose bibs aren’t treated. In the last house it was left in the utility room next to softener. If you don’t have one there is probably a bypass valve you can temporarily use to get untreated water.

Not sure of condition of your water that’s not treated, but it may be more user friendly than the softened water.

I’ve safely used vinegar to lower ph, but was rice vinegar and only a few drops at a time. But I also would recommend not using it unless no other options. Hope they bounce back.

Here are some pictures BV (before vinegar) and AV (after vinegar) The first tote is one of my ILGM Gold Leaf and the other one is one of my accidental Autoflower White Truffles that was just about ready for harvest.

Thanks @dbrn32 , I’ve never had to think about this before as I have done some other, smaller hydroponics before in 32oz mason jars (Kratky for veggies and Swiss Chard) and 5-gallon buckets for the same and some marijuana as well. I have grown some good GDP and White Widow that way. Definitely a lesson learned and now a life experience with these totes. But if the worst thing I got was a little disappointment, some new knowledge, and a little experience out of this whole experiment, then I guess that I’m still ahead in the game. It’s still a fun ride. Thanks for your help and input. Always appreciate it.

ROFLMAO
I know that feeling (is there a shame emoji)

I think half a gallon of vinegar was probably too much. Was the water being aerated or circulated when you added the vinegar?
You want to add some vinegar, vigorously aerate/ circulate it for at least 5 (preferably 10-15) minutes and then re-test.

I use white vinegar or sulfuric acid but only need 8-12 drops for a 2 gallon bucket. My tap water pH is around 9.0 but the water has no minerals so no carbonate hardness (KH) or general hardness (GH) and the pH can drop easily.

If you have an ion exchange water softener, they usually swap the calcium for sodium and high levels of sodium can affect plants too. High levels of sodium is also bad for people and animals as it can damage your kidneys.

Hi @randylilgnome , Yes, had 4 inch airstones going and had my stir stick going as well (old shop-vac extender tube). Happened over about 1/2 hour trying to get PH down. As they say, experience is the best teacher. I was worried about the salt buildup in my kidneys as well so I make sure to intake a lot of alcohol to break it up and flush it out…lol
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Nutrient stained but not brown or slimy. It’s not looking good though.

Here’s some pictures from today. Not looking good at all, I think they’re headed towards the city composter. I’m giving them one more day because I don’t want to do it on Fathers Day. Rest of my plants are doing great, great learning experience and lesson.

A pinch of citric acid goes a long way. It is usually found in the baking isle of the grocery aisle.

Thanks @JaneQP , I appreciate it. I had used fresh lemons off of my tree before in a pich. But I’ll definitely pick some up to keep with the supplies.

With sadness and regret, chopped both of these girls and put them in the city composter bin. Especially hard because the White Truffle (Accidental Autoflower) was literally a week from being done. I went out to look at them and there was just no recovering from it. Even the stems had bleached white from the healthy green that they were on both. Come to think of it, I should have taken pictures if I could have seen through my tears . Maybe I’ll snag a couple back out just to document what happens and how it shows.

Went out and grabbed a couple from the bin, just to show the “bleaching” of the stems from the vinegar. Definitely tan and not green, no coming back from it. Look at how nice some of the nugs were, so sad .
