I bite the bullet and bought an entry level microscope. High school level AmScope, 2x-4x.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE! No more guess work. Snipe off a small sample of bud and leaf, put it on a slide, and you have your answer, in full color .
2x fills the frame, giving you an amazing perspective of all the trichomes on a portion of the bud. 4x actually let’s you look into the individual trichomes, and look for signs on cloud transitioning to amber.
I wish I’d done this sooner.
Wish I could find a handheld version that worked like this 
I’ve not had a good experience with the cheap Amazon ones we use through an app 
Either apps don’t work or theres pop-up adds that make useing them near impossible and if i get past all that, then theres the digital rendering that makes clear and cloudy look the same 
.
Love it, I have been using my kids microscope for years. Had to get a new dust cover for it. My wife went ballistic when I got sticky canna resin all over it once. Now I only use it when she is not home. Ha
