Here's my 1st Grow!

Generally you will see some slight discoloration in leaves. You are growing in FF OF so nutrient wise you’ll be good for a while. I use FF OF and my last 2 grows started getting deficiencies while in Veg. With everyone’s help figured out I needed cal mag. Essentially you can use it even if you don’t necessarily need it.

As he said you can use it whether or not you see any deficiency. I have not read anywhere that there was too much CalMag but I have surmise that there is. Just none that I have read where too much was given.

My girls this year are starting off slower than last year but I think I have a better idea of what to expect. I plan on going out of country for the summer but I have family that is going to tend my plants for me. I should be back just in time to see them start to flower.

Hey ya’ll! Auntie here with an update,

So I got some more new gear (again)! I’m starting to think that growing might turn out to be more expensive than smoking! Lol. Anyway, I got some inkbird controllers ($70 on amazon), some cloth pots, clip fans (still looking for some better ones than these), magnet hooks and little metal plates.

The magnet hooks & plates are to hang all of my stuff in the tent. Here’s how the inkbirds are hanging. There’s a metal plate on the other side of the tent that the magnet sticks to.

It’s getting pretty messy with all of these wires everywhere. Any tips on what to do about them?

04162020-3.jpg

Here’s how my babies are looking. They grow up so fast, it’s mind boggling.

And a couple of closeups:

And here’s how things are looking. Hint: they’re looking pretty good!! Didn’t realize growing would be this fun.

04162020-8.jpg

They’re getting big so quickly. I’m planning on topping them soon. I’m also considering getting bigger pots (5 gallon). They are in two gallon pots right now. When should I repot?

Looks like you’ve got a bit to go before a repot. Keep putting up the pics and we’ll help.

A couple of obvious signs of the need to repot are when you stop seeing growth in your girls and when you start seeing what looks like deficiencies despite doing all the right things.

Got it - i’ll keep an eye on em!

Hi everyone, Auntie Kush here w/ another update!

So first things first, my plants were looking pretty happy and based on some advice, I went ahead and topped them.

1_pre_top.jpg

This is what they looked like after the top:

2_topped.jpg

I was worried I didn’t take off enough. However pretty soon, this was the least of my worries. I go in my tent to check on how they were doing a couple of days later, and discovered THIS:

MOLDDDDDDDDDD

3_moldy_leaf.jpg

Anyway, I found a recipe for a mold spray (1 tbsp baking soda, 1 tbsp cooking oil, a couple of drops of dish soap to 1 gallon of water) and sprayed my plants after tearing off any affected leaves.

4_spray.jpg

They’re looking okay after spraying, but then I went in to check on them 12 hours later and the tips were all greyish/brown on a couple of the plants. I realized that I made the spray way too strong. I used 1 quart of water rather than a gallon.

5_burn (1).jpg

I was worried when i noticed, but they’ve since bounced back. I plan on spraying once a week (with a more dilute spray) to prevent the mold from coming back.

Here’s how things are looking:

6_mold_chart.jpg

I dropped my RH a bit (from about 65% to 60%), bumping up my VPD from around ~1.0 to about 1.3. The line is jumpy because of the controllers ticking on & off. The plants are a bit bigger, so they can probably tolerate it.

I’ve been a bit busy, so I’m trying to catch everyone up. More updates to come!

The fan that I have is a hyperfan 6". Apparently it’s a pretty insane fan. $200 on Amazon! Gonna have to say thanks again to my friend who gave me that!

How many fans do you have in your tent? You might not have enough air movement and that is what is causing the mold issue.

wow, nice setup @AuntieKush, great job on the plants. i’m guessing you have a 4x4 tent. i can get six 3 gallon pots in mine as long as i keep the veg to 30 or 35 days. i made the mistake of pushing the veg on this grow and i’m out of room with 5 plants in there. good luck on your grow, set to watching

I messed up the pictures in my last post. Been a bit under the weather and just got around to fixing it.

Here it is: Plants are looking happy after topping. Interesting to see how the leaves turn out after being cut, and to watch all of the new growth!

I got a spray bottle from home depot for my anti-mold spray. Definitely beats having to use a spray bottle and only $10. Highly recommended.

Before spray:

After spray:

I also set up a new drain hose. I think I got too big of a hose, I might have to look for some sort of fittings and adapters. It sure does make watering easier. I had to get a bit of a siphon going to get it started, but I just put the end submerged in a container outside of my grow, draining into the earth once the container overflows. I might have to get a little pump because I don’t want to keep having to re-start the siphon. Will post more details next time I water. Letting them get a bit dry now.

Things have been looking pretty good in the tent lately. The jerky lines are from the exhaust fan coming on and the air changing over. Pretty happy with my averages! 76F, 60% RH and 1.3 VPD.

A question for you guys - some of my leaves look like this:

Is this something serious? What’s going on here?

@Oldsoldier1976 I’ve got 3 fans in my tent, two little clip fans and a box fan. I just got 2 small oscillating fans to add a bit of airflow to the setup. Hoping I can ditch the box fan!

@monkman Thanks! I’ve got more soil and a bunch of 5 gallon cloth pots. Wondering if that might be a bit too much for a 4x4. I might cull a couple of plants (one of my plants got a bit too dry). I’m considering flipping to flower soon. I’m guessing 9x5gal will be waaaay too much?

you can grow one plant in a 4x4 in a 9 gallon pot… but i’ve been growing 6 plants in 3 gallon pots. it just depends on your veg time. i’ve had three grows now all in 4x4’s. when i kept the veg time to 30 to 40 days it was workable. this time i let them go to 40 to 45 days veg… i’ve got a real problem with 6 plants in a 4x4 like that. i’m going to buy another 4x4 flower tent next season and just put 4 plants in each… yes, i can get 6 plants in 3 gallon pots into a 4x4 but it is a pain in the ass. even if i have them on light veg i have to take two out of the tent to get around the humidifier and fan to work on them or water them.
it looks to me like 4 plants in a 4x4 would be a lot more user friendly.
five gallon pots are too big and you don’t need them unless you are going to let them veg out. out of 18 plants i’ve had dirt left over when i dump out the 3 gallon pots, but yes on the first two grows i was going for a short veg time. Amanda, who is coaching me just went to 7 gallon pots for her plants, but she has a 10x14 room she grows in. if you are going to use 5 gallon pots in a 4x4 tent you can probably get them in there, but if you are going to use the whole pot you are going to run out of tent room. at best i would put 4 five gallon pots into a 4x4 and do less than 50 days veg to be sure not to blow out the tent…oops did i say i was drunk? use what u got but remember 4x4 is a small area and i only use 3 gallon pots because i only do 30 to 40 day veg times.

Definitely some food for thought… I’ve got some 5 gal pots, and some soil so I might just cram em in there because I feel like i’ll kill em in 2 gal pots with how frequently they’ll be needing to get watered. I figure with the 5 gallons, I’ll have more margin for error.

Hey Ya’ll,

Auntie here with a quick update.

So when I was under the weather, I didn’t tend to my babies quite as well as I should have, and they got a bit too dry, or perhaps I didn’t do a good job watering one of them. Spot the problem child:

Here’s a closer look:

Poor baby:

I’m gonna give her a bit of extra water and hope she perks up!

The rest of my girls are looking great though:

More updates coming soon!

Hi Ya’ll,

Auntie here w/ an equipment update! I’ve been pretty excited to share this. I got a bit of new equipment, and totally re-did my tent setup. Things are SO MUCH BETTER. Check it out:

  1. I got a carbon filter, and the correct sized exhaust hose (6").

The hose now perfectly snaps into this exhaust vent that was already on my garage, sitting flush with the grate, with no additional hardware, tape, etc. It has great flow going directly outside.

  1. I moved all of my controls outside of the tent. It definitely feels like the right way to have things set up, it’s much easier than having to dig around in the tent to set things up, it removes some light pollution from the tent, and it looks cool. Love it.

  1. I redid my fan setup, and moved where my pulse grow monitor and my controller sensors are. I’ve got 4 fans in there now. Two oscillating and two non-oscillating.

  1. I also moved around some of the electrical cords, so things are much neater. Still not amazing, but way better than they were.

Seems like it’s paying off a bit. My VPD has been much more stable after all this work, except for when the humidifier ran out of water. Oops!
