Help choosing the right LED lights for grow tent

Newbie post, thank you in advance. :+1:

4’x8’x6.5" ipower grow tent. I plan on using one end of it for a scrog. Approx 2’ - 2.5’x 3.5-4’ screen. 2-3 plants. Tent will also have a plant or two under a meizhi 450 reflector right next to the scrog (I already own the meizhi 450). Budget is $200

I’ve narrowed it down to 3 choices of lights (but I’m willing to consider others).

2 Growstar 300w UFO w/ cob ( I have one of these in my 2x4’ tent, and like it).

2 Meizhi 300w reflector series (I’ve been using a 450, but the 300 appears to be close in performance for less $$).

2 Roleadro 400w cob (not the Cree) Not much info about this. Cheap cob junk is not my goal.

I’ve scoured the internet, and there isn’t a ton of first hand experience with any of these. They all appear to pull 200w± at the plug.

Any input/suggestions/recommendations ?

Quite a few guys here running roleadro cobs. I believe @Countryboyjvd1971 and now @Donaldj have them in use. Both solid guys I’m sure will give you fair honest first hand opinion.

@Drinkslinger I own the roleadro cob and I like it. I’ve been looking at their new 300w cob, it looks a little more red heavy. But the 400w has performed great

@Drinkslinger you didn’t ask about them but I am using Dimgogo LED’s and am quite happy with them.
I have two Dimgogo 2000W (354 watts actual) and one Dimgogo 1500W (268 watts actual).

I cannot speak to the life span as I am on my first grow (only using one 2000W at this stage).

The 1500W may be a decent choice for your space, I am not sure. Dimgogo has some smaller (and larger) units to choose from as well.:cowboy_hat_face::writing_hand::man_scientist:

@Drinkslinger. Btw. Welcome to the community. Everyone here is pretty cool and will try to help if we can

I use viraspectra 300watt led they are good kind of white light

@hornhead are you using the non Cree cob version of the roleadro 400w and can you confirm 200w± at the plug? I need at least 400w of actual lighting for the space. How’s the spectrum on them? The dimgogo looks good for the money, but I think multiple lights might work better for my setup.
I would also consider mixing the lights ie. 1 roleadro and 1 growstar. Etc.

Thanks for the welcome. I’ve done a few outdoor grows, switched to a tent this winter, and now I’ve got the bug.

@Drinkslinger. Yeah, it’s the non Cree. I can’t comfirm 200 at wall personally, just from what I read. I know my plants seem to love it. That’s all I use, is Roleadro Galaxyhydro products

Just picked up one of each the cheaper 400w draws 190+ at the wall the new cree version little over 100w so if you don’t mind the purple hue than the $90 400w is decent deal

@Donaldj. The cob you got from roleadro is purplish? I’ve had 2 still use one and the light it puts off is more natural, maybe a slight pink hue

I had expected more pinkish hue but pairing it with the cree so I don’t think the color will be as annoying to me also have to remember I use LEC which has CRI 90+ so I have been spoiled for a while not having to look at my ladies in yellow blue or purple lights.

Yeah, I can see that. Your eyes are used to seeing a certain light. I started with LEDs so my eyes are used to it. I have the glasses, I just never wear them. Probably should

@Donaldj. Here is with just my cob on. Not sure you’ll be able to see the color it puts off with my phone camera

and here’s one of just my 2nd generation roleadro and the combo of the two

Looks about the same pink/blurple hue and yes I am not used to reg blurple leds so to me it just looks blurple lmao. It doesn’t mean it won’t work just that it is not as nice as my usual light on my eyes

That is nice on the eyes. I know that when I was vegging with just the cob, my node spacing was so tight I had to remove quite a bit of growth for room

Plants look great btw

I only say purple because as you see above my LEC’s have such white light 3100k and CRI color rendering index of 90+ with natural daylight mid day being 100 CRI most crees used in grow lights being 70-80 and so called full spectrum lights rating 50-60
Keep in mind plants use more colors and light spectrum than a human eye can detect and reflect what they don’t use the higher CRI being favored by most light manufacturer’s now is based on research. They have found that plants use more spectrum range than they first believed so higher CRI has some benefits and can work just as well as the blue/red combos while making it easier on us growers to see what’s going on

When I decided to start growing meds inside, I did a bit of research deciding on either Hps or LEDs. I decided LEDs mainly because they are cheaper to run and run cooler. I’ve never grown with Hps and don’t think I’d want to. Now, your lec lights do have my interest. Also, I’ve been reading up on the vero kits and reading what @dbrn32 has said about them those sound nice. What’s the heat like with the lec

1 6" 440cfm rarely run at more than 50% vents heat from 3 315w LEC’s with very little effort actually laser tested kolas tonight 10" from light at 75f  My ballasts are not in space and lights are sole heat source

Do you need ballast for LEC lights. If I’m not mistaking, I believe Amazon has the whole setup connected, like plug in play. Or the smaller 150w Hps kits
