Does it roast better than hot air?
I learn more here than I did in college
I love love love a good cup of coffee! Like minds in this place. Love it
Just curious, but where did you get your cherry pie? I’ve been searching for some reg seeds in that strain
CP is from ilgm when the had the buy 10 get 10 sale months back.
Well taste is subjective as you know. And 95% of all the coffee out there is drum roasted. Hot air roasting is faster and has “cleaner” and more pronounced flavors. Drum roasting is slower, but generally allows more coffee roasted per session and tends to have more body.
I like drum better. And is probably a better option for new roasters.

Great places to research all things coffee if that’s your thing.
For me, quality of flavor is the single most important factor, that being said, drum roasting, or air?
Sounds like air might be better?
I’ll definitely spend some time checking those sites.
I’ve looked into growing coffee, but unfortunately it doesn’t grow in my area very well. This is the next better step.
Really appreciate the direction thanks!
You might enjoy air roasting then…while you get less per batch, it is quite a bit faster. Enjoy the rabbit hole…I spent years researching.
All this talk has me wanting to fire up the espresso machine again. But for now I’m doing my morning nicotine and caffeine (new roast) wake up routine. Excuse the silly coffee cup…it’s like the wife knew I was going to take a picture. Haha
As many as I usually go down every day, this is just another to fall into.
I’ll look for air roasters first, and compare to a drum roaster. This is going to be fun.
I have a decent pump driven one, it works well, but the La Marzocco Linea Mini is my dream machine for at home. It’s been on my list for years. This whole set up is going to be awesome someday. Roasting my own, this has to be just as satisfying as growing my own!
I have tried growing…sorta. I germinated many beans (seeds) and had success. Which is amazing considering how much the beans go through. Most beans are still viable.
I have a Rancilio set…Sylvia machine and Rocky grinder. Sylvia was modded with a PID for more consistent pulls. Bought them on sweet Maria’s over 15 years ago. Tanks. Back then they were about $800. My dream setup would be over $4000…lol…mazzer grinder and a dbl boiler machine…can’t remember the machine brand…caffeine has hit me yet.
Yawn this coffee talk is making me need coffee xD
Stuck my head in the tent this morning to check on everyone. Net is filling up quick and more main branch growth. I’ll let the new runners go for a couple days and the other branches I bent over are doing great. Already flipped themselves over and looking at the light. Will be feeding tomorrow…soil is getting dry and don’t want to wait too much longer. Snipped a few more older fan leaves.
Outside girls have gotten used to the 5-6 hrs of direct sunlight and have started their flower too. I used 10 gal pots and they are drying out faster than the tent ladies. From being outside? I forgot to take a lux measurement outside…I’m curious.
That’s the super symmetrical squatty Cherry Pie in the pics…she stayed small but still a nice looking plant. Full and super healthy.
I really need to do a neem oil on everyone…no buds yet, so it should be ok no?
Oh…and I need to get serious about a dehumidifier…can’t wait too much longer.
Yep, neem is fine before buds start growing, I usually do my last neem treatment as I start the girls in flowering.
Good deal…they getting a good hose down then. Especially the outside plants…I have already seen a few different bugs crawling on them.
Yes, I find roasting my own coffee to be very satisfying. I can get the roast exactly where I like it and have freshly roasted beans (with a few days rest) which has so much more flavor than pre-roasted coffee that’s been sitting in a warehouse or store shelves for months.
I used air popcorn poppers for many years, they are cheap and they work but they rush thru the roast pretty quick (5-6 minutes) which makes it difficult to get the roast right where you want it as even an extra 10 seconds can take them much darker than intended.
I like the Fresh Roast air roasters, good bang for the buck, they give a lot more control over the popcorn poppers, have heat and air speed settings and allow me to perfectly dial in the roast. They do small batches though, I do 3 batches (about 10 minutes each) on the weekend which makes enough coffee for the next week. I have no experience with drum roasters.
Day 67 (11):
Mixed 3 gal water pH 6.4…2 gal into plants and reserve 1 gal for recharge. Then 5 gal Bloom+Epsom and 4ml/gal silica. pH 6.5. Cleaned up, made recharge and sucked up about 1 1/2 gal runoff…better than last time for sure. Then added 900ml 5g/gal recharge per plant. Did a neem oil treatment…will be the last one. Turned up exhaust fan one notch to help with watering humidity.
Outside plants doing well…they’re patiently waiting for more soil. It’s almost time to leave them outside full time. I need to make a fence to keep all the critters out of them…raccoons and possums galore.
No pics…you’ll have to take my word for it.
eta: coffee is better on day 2…day 4 is usually the best with Ethiopia in the blend.
Not much to report except that I snapped a few more necks. And will probably do it one more time this weekend along with a good trimming. Next time I may only veg for 7 weeks as I am about maxed out on light height…I have about 6” left to play with.
I ran to the hydro store and picked up a bag of soil and a couple risers for outside plants aaaand ordered the 600w Blue MH.
All my stuff is here for my barrel project this weekend…going to be a fun project with the wife. She’ll get an animal bath/water source from the top of the drum that will cut off so she’s excited. Keep her involved as much as possible.
Whew…summer isn’t even here yet and it’s hot outside. Managed to get a little sun on my face and arms…farmers tan happening. lol Cut the yard, edged, blew, etc. then used my old Fox Farms nutes for our Viburnum hedge that’s been begging for some attention. Gotta use it up somewhere…and we’ll see if they like it. Topped off the 10 gallon pots the outside girls are in, then fed them Bloom/silica/recharge.
Had time to run to the shop and grab a clear 55 gallon drum instead of the blue I had here. I’ll be able to see liquid line without removing lid. Had a brain fart drawing the line…lol…bottom line is the line to follow.
Circular saw did the trick…smooth cuts. I have a nute barrel (45 gallon) and wife has a critter watering hole.
My day is done…time for food, bubbler, and Netflix.

You growing some sticks on those last 2 pots in the picture with the critter watering hole? If so, I can gather you some sticks for a dollar a pop. XD
