Frequency of nutrient additions

A question from a fellow grower:

When using nutrients during the grow the grow bible suggests that you only add them at 50% of the recommended level and only every other watering. My math says that by only using nutrients at every other watering at half strenght the result is 25% of the recommended
levels from the Flower Power grow schedule. My grow seems to be suffering from a nitrogen deficiency (lower leaves turning yellow)after following these suggestions. The grow schedule for soil that Mr. Bergman sent a link to just recently seems to indicate that nutrients are being used at every watering at different levels depending on what stage of the grow your at.What is the suggested frequency of nutrient additions given the opposing
veiwpoints

The suggestion that I always give is to start at half or a little under and adjust the dose up to full as you see how the plant reacts to it . Sometimes a batch of soil may be a little hotter ( more nutrients in it ) than others and if the plant is getting plenty already you run a risk of burning the plant starting off full strength. Once burnt it won’t come back so starting easy is just a safety precaution . Good luck and welcome to the forum

Many of the soils/soiless mediums won’t need any additives for the first 30 days. Usually the N is high. It’s when you go into your bloom (12/12) cycle you’ll need to add PK. Some cal and mag too. After those 30 days I add nutes almost every watering but at a very, very low level. The nutes are increased as the weeks go on… but frequency of feeding goes to 1 out of 3 - keep watching the plant. She’ll tell you.

If you’re in bloom it’s mostly ok for those bottom leaves to start turning yellow. Many times I’ve found it’s the plant cannibalizing what’s left of the N… (I would think it’s because there’s none in the soil )they’ll be bright yellow and floppy - but if it’s crispy and necrotic it’s most likely a burn or lockout of some kind.

@Oldstoner is right to start at a lower dose nutrients, some plants are more sensitive and will burn easier. Once you see the plant doing okay, you can increase the dosage keeping track of target ppm numbers, 400 ppm for early veg, 800 ppm for later veg, 1200 ppm for transition and moving forward.

@majicmarkers is right about the cannibalizing, are the plants in flower?
