Foxtailing, pistils and trichomes

I have two blue dreams indoors in week 7 of flower. they are really foxtailing. the stacking foxtail calyxes are still shooting white pistils out. I’m just starting to see amber on the trichomes.

my outdoor grow foxtailed like crazy and the white pistils seemed like they’d keep shooting out indefinitely regardless of the amber trichome status. but as i don’t even have a full harvest under my belt yet not sure if this is a real pattern.

does foxtailing affect pistils as an indicator? or do they still experience normal growth and my plants just aren’t close to being done yet even though there are some ambers? not sure what i should be looking at to decide when to start flush.

I want to follow this

I read that it’s either too much heat or you have some light leaks. @Hogmaster can you help?

I also read that it could be from too intense light

yeah im sure my lights were too intense. there were signs earlier that i chose to ignore. next grow i’m not going to let the plants get that tall. first time grower. let them veg too long and at times i hit my bandwidth limit on absorbing new info and taking a few needed actions.

but now that i’m here just wondering about the pistils and if they’re still a valid indicator for flush or if i should focus solely on the trichomes.

Most folks use trichomes rather than pistils to determine harvest. I do use pistils to give me an estimate of how close I am to looking at trichomes. In your case at 7 weeks of flower, I would ignore the foxtail pistils and focus on trichomes. If trichomes are too difficult to see, use the “main pistils” rather than the foxtail pistils.

I follow the Trichomes…

You have the right attitude for sure, I have seen first hand and online so many times were someone will get discouraged just after a few grows. I love horticulture in general and love learning new methods and things involved with the grow. Keep up the good work man bud looks nice. For what it’s worth I have read foxtailing can be caused by stress from light leaks, intensity of lights and heat as well as stress from being moved too much and of course genetic foxtailing strains.

And focus on your trichomes as the pistols will just keep popping up.

i have just a few ambers popping up. if i plan to flush for at least week, what would you all suggest? would you start now or wait a bit longer? if i wanted say, 25% amber when i’m done, is that a week? two weeks? not sure how fast things progress. outdoors one of my plants went overripe super fast.

kinda crazy we do all this research into getting the right strains and effects and then something as easy as harvesting too early or too late by a few days could totally change the effects.

got too much money into this to give up now lol. i’m into it. def days when i can’t focus or get the energy up to do what i need to do but overall it’s really been pretty amazing. OUTDOOR however is another story. that’s not for me. too stressful. looking forward to increasing my indoor growspace and changing up my growing methods for round 2 soon!

Dont give up on outdoor this is a pic of my organic grow. Organic pesticides top dressed with dry amendments. My first grow actually. Started late and I know I’m getting a small yield but damn I’m happy bro. Just trying to give some motivation cuz if I can do it so can you!

lookin good!! thanks for the encouragement. my last outdoor plant is coming down tomorrow so i should really hold off judgement until i get to smoke it. just between mother nature and … well mother nature… it wasn’t really fun for me. i also had an “auto” that may not have been and i spent half the summer trying to keep up with her and that really did me in. bud rot, mold, freak storms… eh. indoor is looking a little more appealing

Thank you growmie you’re ladies looking amazing as well! I feel you on that mother nature dont play I’m in the high desert of socal and the weather is on crack at times lol where you located?

i’m in the district which is literally a swamp. plenty of days over 100 (but seems half the country was that way this year) and humidity like 70-80% with sometimes daily 20 minute storms with high winds. also just hasn’t been fun to be outside, period. oh and bugs. lots and lots of bugs. if i ever move back to socal will do more outside for sure! i’m sure the desert has it’s crazy challenges tho too. nothing good is ever super easy right?

I would say wait atleast another week maybe 1.5 then start your flush.

Oh man sounds like you had the elements against you sorry to hear that. Maybe next year mother nature will be on your side. Yes being in the desert I had some wtf moments where I wanted to just stop I had 8 plants die on me they were happy I messed up an foliar sprayed cuz I seen bugs welp I should have waited till nightfall but I was in a panic as a first grower but failures are lessons in my eyes.

aww sorry to hear that! i had hydrogen peroxide completely wreck my leaves, which isn’t supposed to happen. but i hear ya. once they went into flower i couldn’t find a thing that was safe to use to keep the pests at bay. i’m gonna be smoking me some bugs for awhile.

I also had the h202 kill them as well. I started using this method with my own kick with peppermint extract drops

i tried three batches of h202 and finally found one that was fine. going back to the same grocery store all the way across town tomorrow to buy the same brand because i’m uber superstitious now.

i’d be afraid of the garlic and peppermint affecting the taste. lots of folks said not to use garlic in flower. along with pretty much everything else.
