They are soil nates
They come from organic soils
They need moist soil to lay their eggs
So letting soil dey out help eliminate them as well as sticky traps i layer or perilte on top of the soil also help
Dusting the soil with DE is also a good idea
Here some links to a few items floks these will help rid your grow room of nates younshould be able to be nate free before flower time
And yes @merlin44 soil nates can cause damage thier larvae can eat tender roots
Just a FYI @Swiss
And they are very common in organic soil
@merlin44 the sticky tapes will work on the adults however they have already laid a gazillion eggs that you can’t see and the tape won’t touch. The mini maggots use the roots for food and then come to the surface after they’ve laid eggs. According to ILGM guide you can also use hydrogen peroxide, DE
Check out this link brother it should help you understand
To much for me to type lol @merlin44
Its a great product with many benefits from bug control to using as a silica additive to you feeding you can use it also for health benefits
I use diatomaceous earth like crazy! My grow tents are in my cats’ room, and before I got the tents I was always getting spider mites. Now, I put d-earth under my tents, and make a circle with it around my tents. I also put it inside, on the floors of my tents, but I vacuum it out before bloom sets in too much, otherwise that stuff can blow onto those sticky buds. I’ve also made a solution with it and water, to spray the walls; once it’s dried, it’s ready to cut a b#@&h.
In the 2 years with the tents & d-earth, I haven’t had a single insect problem. D-earth is fairly safe, just don’t get it in your eyes or breathe in the dust.
I’m not sure if it’s still available but I was able to get the de food-grade along with the dusting contraption that you showed in the link on amazon. Can’t remember how much it was it was a little while back. But if you keep an eye out you can get both for a reasonable price I believe.
The duster isn’t necessary but I do find it works pretty well. I use it every time I apply. Good luck happy growing
@Swiss@merlin44 . I have had success using a soil top dressing sold by Amazon called Gnat Nix and the yellow stick tape . You can see how it’s used on youtube . I had to use it on our flower house plants also . I still see a gnat every once in awhile because they are trying to get into the soil but the gnat nix gets them or the stick tape . @highcountrygal and @Countryboyjvd1971 statements are right on the money , don’t over water and dusting with DE is also a good idea because it will help get rid of other unwanted critters . Good luck .
Yeap, they are fungus gnat @Swiss and I see you are in good hands
Nematode and potato thick slices work great for the larvae too
I get rid of them with potato slices and yellow sticky paper and neem oil.
DE will prevent further female spond or the larvae to crawl out the soil…
And on several species of sciaridea, female are wings less or do not fly…
And if you want to go with the solution propose by @highcountrygal, use the Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis or Bt-i , not the Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki …, Bt-k like highcountrygal suggestion is more for caterpillars and butterflies (lepideptora) the Bt-i is more for mosquito and flies and fungus gnat (Diptera)
You too. Gotta put on my public face now…would rather stay home & play! Amazing how early some folks seem to need alcohol in texas. Im of another persuasion.
That link will take you to the topic that has all kinds of visual information. There are a couple of different charts for pH as well as some other info that you may find helpful.
My connection here is spotty, but I respond to tags as soon as I am able…
@Niala@kabongster Hey thanks for all the feed back, i bought the DE, and some Mosquito Bits, yellow pads, and new soil, on amazon yesterday, along with PH tester and ph up and down, and some beach front property in North Dakota, plan to switch the plants to the new soil and larger pots Friday or Saturday, when it comes to the DE, do you just add the powder to the top of the soil or do you mix it with water and add it also how much do you add? In the mean time i made my own version of the yellow sticky pads i saw online by using a yellow sticky pad and rubbing petroleum jelly on it… Sorry for the third degree, just don’t want to ruin my progress… As of now after killing the two gnats i have not seen another one, but i’m sure they were busy laying some eggs. Thanks again for the advice
