Hello, am new to this site and am beginning my first indoor grow. I purchased the vivosun 4x2 tent kit which included exhaust fan, carbon filter and vivosun VS 1000. I have 2 additional fans circulating air and since I live in cold country I heat the tent to mid to upper 70s. My humidifier only keeps it around 50 on full setting. My medium is coco coir and a bit of bat guano and perlite. I water at a ph of around 6.2. My light hangs as recommended by manufacturer at 24" above seedlings at 50% power. Still my plants seem to have unnoticeable growth everyday. They are green but being autos i would think they should be growing faster?? I am on day 8 since they’ve sprouted. Only maybe an inch of growth. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
@13runner First off. Welcome to ILGM.
Usually the first 3 weeks after germ is when a seedling is growing the root structure.
Painfully slow sometimes
After that they’ll usually start to take off.
Got some pics ?
Put em up.
Hi @13runner welcome to the neighborhood, it hard with such limited information it’s probably as @Oldguy said, just the normal stall the tops go through at this stage where the roots are growing and you can’t tell anything is happening. I just want to add that this time of year it’s cooler and the floor stays cold so your soil does to especially if you don’t put something under your plants to insulate them from the cold. This happened to me my first year growing in pots I ended up veggin for three months
They are both most likely correct.
Happy Halloween! Thank you guys for the advice! I still feel like these girls aren’t living up to thier full potential. From reading some of the other threads on slow growing white widow I have come to the conclusion maybe too much water? I am gauging it by the first inch or so of the coco coir. Seems dry out mostly within 2 days. I have read not to saturate the entire area. Just a circle around the the plant so the roots will reach out. So I am gonna let them dry out and take that approach. Also I dropped my light to 21 1/2 inches. Also in my frustration to be on track I did fertilize once with fox farm. I hope I didn’t damage them with that after reading thats a no, no at this age. Do you guys think I am on track with these changes?
Things lookin up yet? With coco you need to give all the nutrients the plant will need. If your using the fox farm liquid trio go about 1/2 strength, their schedule is a little aggressive for most
Hey thanks for the advice. I think maybe lowering the light slightly may have helped the last couple days. But man these girls are growing slow. I actually was thinking it had something to do with that coco coir. Im Realizing there are different quality coco out there and mine is most likely the low end. Figure I’ll go with the fox farm soil next round. So the fox furtilizer recommends 1/2 a teaspoon per gallon weekly fir seedlings. You think half that is sufficient. Im also wondering if maybe its just the seeds themselves as well. They are the smallest of all the seeds I have. They grow super slow. And the new leaves seem abnormally small. Otherwise you think they look good?
For some reason I thought more time had past since your last post. For now I think they look fine. Don’t give up or get too frustrated just yet. As others said they could just be working on that root system which can take a bit of time. Your temp and humidity are pretty good so I would go with the 1/2 strength nutes for now and see what happens.
I just had 7 seeds break ground in my 1st coco run and learned a lot from hellraisers coco/jacks journal and a bunch of other growers as well.
Don’t give up on them yet but if you get to the point where you decide coco isn’t for you I would recommend happy frog, I’ve had a bunch of successful grows with it.
If you have optimized all other parameters (light, hydration, air flow, humidity, temp, and nutrition), then you could have a genetics issue. Until you dial everything in I wouldn’t go there just yet.
Plants are pretty amazing when provided what they need to thrive. It’s probably just fine. This is a marathon vs a sprint. Leave it alone and it will grow.
Yeah just being that they are auto i feel a little bit of a time crunch. Especially when I see pics of other peoples in week two that are twice the size. All experimental though. I’ll keep at it and see what happends. I appreciate the input.
Alright man I appreciate the advice. I will keep at it with half dose nutrients and hope for the best. Since coco coir has so little nutrients do you think it would be beneficial to out a small layer of happy frog ontop. Maybe it some if that nutrient will soak in. I noticed coco coir is one if the ingredients in happy frog. Can’t hurt right? Or am I doing too much?
It couldn’t hurt but probably won’t help either. Even though it’s frowned upon by some I’ve always started my autos in clear solo cups with a colored 1 on the outside of it so light doesn’t shine on the roots. That way you can lift the clear cup out and see how the roots are progressing. This way I’m transplanting a fairly established root system into the larger pot instead of going into the larger pot 1st and waiting forever for roots to develop. That’s what works for me, lots of others have good luck going right into the forever pot
Ok, well that’s good advice. Make sure they have an established root system first. Figured this first grow would be the trial and error run. Already taking notes for the next go. Different soil for sure!
There’s still plenty of time for this grow to turn out well, one other thing worth mentioning is that with coco you want your ph a bit lower than with soil, shoot for 5.8
Ok, good to know. I’ve had alot of conflicting reports on Ph. Too many utube videos. Seems like everybody waters at a different balance. I did notice that coco is at a high level. Makes sense that I would water with a little less. You think I’m doing alright light wise?
Can’t speak much on the light, my guess is that it’s a little weak. Definitely ok for right now. @dbrn32 is the resident light expert around these parts!
Awesome! Well I appreciate the advice. I will keep the forum posted!
By definition, this is exponential growth = painfully slow in beginning 2/3rds but explosively fast is last 1/3.
Good luck. It’s hard to be patient… trust me
Yes it is! Someone told me less is more. Just need to chill and let nature take its course. Expensive little start up though. Easier said then done. Haha Thanks though man. If their not dying their living right?
