Greetings,
I’m ready to begin my first indoor grow. I’m going to grow Durban Poison in a 6 ft tall closet, so approx 5 feet of usable growing space. I’ve been reading that many sativas can triple in height following switch to flowering cycle. Is this accurate for Durban Poison?
I’m using a LED light so excessive heat hopefully be much of an issue, but I’d hate to have the plants try to bust out of my space and get to close to light.

Yes to couple times. That I’ve grown it. It does have an incredible stretch almost 3 times normal, it over grew the tents quickly.
Thanks, I’m planning on a short veg cycle as a result, maybe topping them too, I’ve been reading/watching a lot about that practice for promoting more horizontal growth

Sativa will stretch more than indicas. You should consider low stress training. A lot of different ways to train. If you want to control height and get more colas you should consider a method that I like to use. Let plants get to 5th node and top it. Then use something like soft tie and right under top set of nodes wrap soft tie around plants and pull over until it is essentially running horizontally. Tie off to side of pot or I like to use 3/16 wood dowels. What will happen is all of your lower growth will start to reach for light until it creates a canopy. You can easily have 8-12 colas that will develop. Your girls will grow into bushes instead of trees. I’m going to show you my results with this method. First picture is of current grow I only veged these for 6 weeks. Second picture is of last grow using this method.

Expect your sativa to stretch double its height.
That being said when you have your plant in your tent and your lights raised all the way then the thing to do look at the manufacturers information for your led and find out how much distance your light needs from the plant in order to cover how wide its going to be, because you will need distance from your light to your canopy at a max height.
Then you know that’s your maximum height, once your plant has reached half way there flip it.

I’m running a durban poison right now that is 1 week into flower, so it is stretching too. These sativas do stretch more than indicas do. I help manage height by keeping the lights as close as I can to the plant. I’ve had 2 plants (including the durban poison) side-by-side under 2 HLG 260s that I’ve kept 18" from the plants during their development and they are both very compact.
Here’s a pic of the durban poison. You can see that the nodal space is still very tight. I still expect it to pack on more height than its counterpart indica to the left. It was at 20" when I flipped a week ago and is at 24" now. I don’t expect that it will get much taller than 3 to 4 feet. I’ve actually backed off the light a bit to encourage more space between the nodes.

20 inches at the switch sounds pretty good, I was thinking 24 inches, but seeing how this is my first grow, I’d rather error on the side of caution and success

Keep in mind that 20" isn’t a standard of some kind and that I raise my plants differently than most people do. Mine are where they are because of the training I’ve done to date. Had I not done so much training they would probably be 2x as high. I don’t want to mislead you.
In general sativas can double in height during their stretch the first several weeks of flowering. Mine is so short because I’ve flooded it with light, topped, FIMed, and supercropped it.
