I just flipped my first plant into flower yesterday. Today was the first full day. I turned off my humidifier. I had the R.H around 40 to 45. While I was away today my soil dried out really bad. I started to get every so slightly tip discoloration/burning. Also during veg I had what looked like slight nitrogen diffiency. I believe this to be all from dry soil. I water every two to three days. How er there has been a few times it’s gotten dry. Today being one of them (believe it was the drop in humidity it caused it to dry faster then in used to)
Anyways I’m aware that bugs like the wet so some people cover their soil. Also covering the soil I would Imagine would help leave the moisture in some. So my question what are my options???
Ive seen folks use straw, just make sure it hasnt been sprayed or treated. For my next grow im adding a cover crop for ground coverage.
You can mulch with any dry organic material, I used alfalfa hay that was just rabbit food I bought at a pet store before I planted my clover cover. I did all that about 2 weeks before I sprouted my seeds. My plants are big enough now that the clover isn’t getting much light and is dying off but the mulch layer is still keeping my soil moist. If I wasn’t doing an organic run, I would use a shredded rubber mulch to avoid attracting pests, you can find it at any big box store in the garden department.
@Mosquitohawk do you grow indoors?
Yep, I’m in a 4x2 tent right now
Maybe not necessarily this grow… However can you add that clover cover or no till stuff to your indoor fabric pots?
Something like this?
Or is that something more for bigger areas like outside or green house with raised garden beds
@Mosquitohawk do you have any pictures? I’m seriously interested in this. I started with a 2x2 two months ago. Now I have that and a 2x4 I recently picked up.
Cover crops are great for most setups, I can’t think of a situation that I wouldn’t use one. However, after this run I probably won’t use clover again, I’ll do some more research and find something else because soil mites love clover (something I didn’t know until last week when I had a little infestation) the mites aren’t really a problem for the plants but it was a little unsettling to open up the tent and see hundreds of them crawling around on the pots.
@Mosquitohawk that’s dope. Ever since I started growing I’ve thought about this but didn’t know it was an option. I
Trust me I know all about taking more photos of my plants then my kids lol. I’ve started albums in my phone for each plant. I’m a brick payer so it’s all chimneys my weed plants and the bug bass I’ve caught. Lol. Hence the name.
I dread the day I open my tent and see bugs. I’ve only had one or two small individual bugs. My friend who’s mentoring me through this just had spider mites. He said you get bugs just cut it down and start over. It’s a hassle and he couldn’t rid them.
I’m trying to build living soil so I expect bugs. Just not so many all at once
He told me i shouldnt have taken my homemade scrog down because I’m gonna need something to support my buds. Yesterday was exactly two months old (also flipped yesterday). It’s apple fritter
Spider mites scare the hell out of me because I know they’re on my property, I see them outside occasionally. The little white soil mites are harmless and there’s beneficial predatory mites that kill the bugs that eat your plants.
@BassNBricks i grow indoors. Im using 3 50 gal pots my next grow. Ill be using clover as a cover
I have thousands of these in my compost pile i started last year.
Im incorporating worms into my next grow. I wont use yard worms tho, ill order em online.
@ChittyChittyBangin whoa! I know someone who grows in 30 gallon pots. I could t imagine 50 gallon!!! I saw your picture with the plastic pool full of ingredients.
@Mosquitohawk
I ALWAYS take a shower after work before opening my tent. And Always do my other gardening early mornings before going out into the world. My attempt at keeping bugs at bay. Plus my tents are in my bed room no thanks
Love it! I have a new vermicompost bin in my kitchen now. They turn my trash into plant food, so cool!
@BassNBricks i tagged you and @Mosquitohawk in my journal… my next project im planning on training the whole space of the 50 gal and then shoot up…
