I just started doing bud wash on my Winter Autoflower grow. I was amazed and shocked by what came out of and off of the buds. I grow all outdoors only. But after seeing the results of doing it that first time, I’ll never NOT do it moving forward. I had a couple of accidental Spring Autoflower plants that I have already harvested in June that got washed and was so glad I started doing it.
I definitely wasn’t ready for the amount of stuff that got left in the buckets. It made me want to gag. It brought out caterpillars, insect turds, dirt, pollen, dust…
I’m using either a 3 or 4 bucket system depending on the quantity to be washed. On my last Winter wash, I had to change out the hydrogen peroxide bucket half way through because it was disgusting. 2 cups H2O2 mixed with water in a 5-gallon bucket.
Bucket 1- Hydrogen Peroxide mix
Bucket 2- Lemon water. Same ratio as H2O2
Bucket 3- Clean water rinse, 5-gallon bucket
Bucket 4- Same as 3. This is the optional one.
I do a wet trim down to bud size, throw buds in the 1st bucket and gently agitate for 45 seconds to a minute. Transfer to 2nd and same process. Transfer to 3, same thing. 4 same thing. I put them out on towels in the sun to dry for an hour. Turn every 15 minutes or so. You’ll be able to tell if they are dry. Bring them in and start the drying process. Hope that helps. Good luck.
Oh, and no adverse effects on taste or anything else. Highly recommended.
Washing it will make it smoother. The genetics and potency are what they are but man it sure does make for some smooth smoke. I grow indoors and will always wash right after the chop.
I wouldn’t do anything that would affect the tricones by washing your buds I rather smoke a bug turd then a bud that was washed and losing some tricones in doing so!
This is not accurate info. Trichs are oil based, water does not affect them in any negative way.
I just dont see how it wouldn’t increase the risk of mold when drying and curing.
It can due to the added moisture but when I do it, I hang the bud with a fan blowing “directly” on them for 4 hours while they drip dry, after that, it is the same dry and cure process. I have never had mold to date using this process.
It also actually helps a bit as mold spores are everywhere, washing removes any that might be present and mold spores are deactivated when wet.
I suggest to any skeptic when this comes up, just do one bud. Then decide for yourself. I do not grow bug turd strains. I grow top shelf smoke and this is the way to make sure my herb is clean and presentable.
That is part of the reason we rinse our buds. The h2o2 help to breakdown some kinds of contaminants and mold spores and whatnot are washed away. So long as your drying environment is relatively free of mold spores the chances of mold after rinsing is lower than not rinsing.
Hey whatever works for you man. I grow indoors in coco in a cold basement and got no bug terds or bugs on my plants. I don’t do bud wash and I grow top shelf stuff. Now outdoor i may see your point. Lots of critters running around.
Thanks really appreciate the information. ![]()

THC is not soluble in water or peroxide. You are only making your flower BETTER. If you are happy with your harvest as is, great! But if indoors, you are smoking your own skin cells. Outdoors you’re smoking everything that lands on the plant. (think about how sticky plants are)
Actually it reduces it due to the plant being completely disinfected. It’s also good at removing white powdery mildew.
Then you are likely smoking your own skin cells, hair, pet dander (if any pets), etc.
It’s such an easy thing to do and pays off in fresher flower after cure (there is a difference in shelf life) and the knowledge you are only consuming cannabis. Just one of the many things a commercial operation isn’t doing.
My budwash practice..
#1 5 gal bucket
1 cup baking soda
1 cup lemon juice
5gal of lukewarm water
#2 5 gal bucket
5 gal lukewarm water
1 cup hydrogen peroxide
#3 5 gal bucket
5 gal COLD water
I dunk 3 or 4 times in each shaking lightly between each bucket.
Ill hang and allow to drip dry for 12 hours with light airflow.
I then rack and allow to dry..
As said above, your trichomes are safe. Youre just washing and disinfecting your grow..
Thanks I appreciate the information.
Thanks for the information, guess I’ve been smoking my own skin cells, at least there only mine lol. Maybe I’ll try it some time and see if i can tell a difference. I used to grow outside years ago NY and bud rot is a real issue up here. Hence why i never did it. In my mind id did everything to keep the buds a dry as possible. Make sense
Dude the bug turd response was to PeeWee saying he would rather smoke bug turds than wash his bud. This process doesn’t work just for me, as you can see everyone but PeeWee that chimed in is saying the same thing.
Good luck in all you GroBro!!
All good man, i did kinda think that at first, but after reading i saw it wasn’t aimed at me. Yes i see lots of people do it. As i said i might even give it a try. Trying it on only a few buds as you said was a good idea. Thanks for the information though
What’s the purpose of #1? Don’t the baking soda (base) and lemon juice (acid) neutralize each other?
I thought the same thing as peewee. And i think spinning the bud in the mix probably would knock keif off the buds and i doubt bugs or dust would really hurt anything
