1st time grower... Please please please provide advise and follow me on this journey

Yes, all of them are autos.

@Graysin I was just reading about FIM, interesting.

Yeah, I prefer it for autos, as it’s less stressful. I find that if I stress my autos too early they seem overeager to flower small.

I topped my autos last (and first) grow. In retrospect, I wish I hadn’t. I don’t think it did any favors to my yields. However, since it was my first grow, I probably just didn’t know what I was doing. It seems with HST it is best to leave that to the professionals. I am only doing LST this time around and I will have a better idea of how the two methods compared. For my phenotypes and environment, anyway. There are just so many variables it seems pretty hard to really say that “Oh, this works in every situation” about anything!

See, that’s exactly what I am talking about. Your plants look fabulous. Mine did not recover quite so beautifully and bushy.

That is exactly what happened to me. So maybe I should try fimming next time around? What exactly is the difference?

Topping: cut just below node
Fim: cut 75% of new growth coming out top cola and leave the rest. gives you between 3-5 colas it is my preferred training for auto besides Regular LST

@Graysin that’s smart, it’s less stressful than topping and they say to try to stress out autos as little as possible. I haven’t been able to successfully fim yet, I’ve tried but to no avail.

@Newbiegrower so far ur doing fine. The plants look healthy and fed, not over or under watered. Ur doing great. I’d say u can get away with topping and lst but fimming is usually better for autos

Personally, I was dying to know the difference, and what it would do for my plants. So, I having 3, I topped one, fimmed one, and left one the hell alone.

The one I topped, didn’t really seem to help anything as far as the colas went, it grew back kinda funny and still into a single bushy cola, albeit pretty thick and beautiful looking. I have also been pretty heavy defoliating, and using some pretty strict lst to get everything even.

The one I left alone, looks amazing as well. Hasn’t had as much stretch as the other two, but started showing trichomes first, and is downright frosty now. Very little defoliation here, and only used a small amount of LST.

The one I fimmed is a complete monster. I don’t believe it stunted it at all, as it just kept growing and growing and growing. It’s easily twice the size of the other two, and is just entering flower now. However, she’s been real picky and has had a couple issues along the way. I have used heavy defoliation and heavy lst. I was literally adjusting ties twice a day on that thing, before just throwing in the towel on keeping it even. Now I’m just pulling branches apart and spreading them out as much as possible.

In no way is any of this conclusive evidence of anything, as I believe some strains can handle all of the training techniques better than others. But I think this is one of those areas where you have to practice, and take some risks, just to see what happens. I also tried super cropping one of my plants, just to see what would happen, and thankfully, it turned out well. I definitely advise LST, as it’s the best way to keep your plants growing healthy and uniform.

Here’s a picture of a grease monkey photo I’m in the process of vegging out till I get the proper shape and amount of colas. It’s another experiment, but that’s how you learn right?

I’m curious to see the final results. I’ll be sticking around to watch

At what point did you fim the one?

Also, were these autos?

I’d have to go check my journal to know for sure, but I believe it was the 5th or 6th node.

Day 14:
The ladies are looking gorgeous. I have been watering them every 2-3 days depending on how light the pot is. Im noticing some yellowing around some leafs. Not sure if normal or they started asking for nutes.

The RT has been stable at 68 during light time and 58-60 during dark hours. Rh is between 58-60.

Medium is FFHF 3/4 and FFLW 1/4.

Here are the pics from today.

GG
How is she looking? I see some diformation and yellowing around the leaves.

GSCE
Am I paranoic? I see some light green/yellowish on one of the leaves as well.

Those are your temperatures? That is a bit chilly. I think I would try to get it a bit warmer, like +5 degrees average.
(I am assuming f and not c) :fire:

Agreed. 68-75 is as cool as my plants really enjoy life. They start to balk and slow down in growth rather dramatically sub-68

Is that night time temps as well?

Yep. Cool night temps (60-65°) are for late flower when you’re trying to pull colors out of plants, like purples and blues from a Blue Dream or Granddaddy Purple. Otherwise I steer clear of anything sub-68° to the best of my ability.

I’m maintaining 64 degrees F at night. How do you suggest keep temps up during dark cycle?
