That’s a good idea I may try the next time, thanks brother
This is all very helpful, thanks so much. All my best stuff (cloth pots, humidifier) is over in my first set up, where I’m still vegging five plants. I’ve been keeping a cup of water and some wet towels in the second space, but the space heater dries everything out so fast. I have a little baby humidifier I can use in the closet, so I’ll try that.
That’s a great idea Lia, it should do the trick ![]()

By the time I got home from work last night, things were worse.
The biggest plant fell over entirely and all I could do was bury it deeper to give it more support. This morning, it’s hard to tell how much hope I should have for it.
The plant in the front – the one that took the brunt of the hot air from the space heater – was bent way over away from the heat, like a person bowing. The side toward the heat was distinctly damaged with crispy edges, and the side away from the heat was undamaged. Pretty obvious. I turned it around to give it a few hours to reach the other direction for the light, and this morning, she’s standing tall.
And, as you can see in the second picture, my mini humidifier is there, and ran all night. I can feel the humidity is way up, though my hygrometer is still reading 28%. I think it must be broken. I’ve added that to my garden store shopping list. ![]()

Lesson learned: keep the heat indirect.
Aw man, that’s rough,poor little girl ![]()
Just a thought, but since you can keep your plants out around the house, why not set these little ones up in the bathroom where they can take advantage of shower borne humidity? That’s keeping it simple, no?
Hope she rallies, I wouldn’t give up on her.
I did move them around when they were seedlings and I could pick them all up on a single tray. Then keeping them under the most possible light meant keeping them stationary. Except now I carry my 5 gallon soft pots to the bathroom to water them in the tub. Is the humidity of the bathroom worth the time they would spend in lower light?
Oh, and my hygrometer says it’s 16% humidity in the bathroom. Definitely broken.
Update on setup 1, Veg Continued, 6 weeks from sprout:
Tiny plants now thriving — so glad I didn’t give up on them. It’s true what they say: you never know how well they’ll recover once you figure out what they need.
Medium plant looking ready to be upgraded to a 5gal pot. I ordered her one and will transplant her when it arrives next week.
And my five gallon ladies are ahhh-mazing. I dropped my spray bottle on one, and she lost a branch, but otherwise recovered beautifully.
Also, IT SMELLS AWESOME IN HERE!
they are strong, resilient to physical stresses, topping, fimming, dropping fans on them, even screw up their pH or their nutrients and they will forgive you.
nice looking garden you have there!![]()
you’ve been busy the last 24 hours! @Lia The gang looks great. Glad you caught the heater when you did or you would have cooked at least one of them sounds like! The trials and tribulations of the weed!
Electric bill up $40 from last month. Gaaahhhhhhhh !+!&/#!_;-:*" space heater.
Dear spring,
Hurry up!
Love,
Lia
New 5 gallon cloth pot arrived, so big sister is in her grown-up pants.
I like these bloembagz.
New hygrometer also arrived, and it takes AAA batteries but I had no spares. Of course I’m impatient, so I went to the convenience store for them. How the heck is it only 39% RH in a room where the humidifier has been running constantly for a week?! Whatever. I moved the humidifier closer. It’s the best I can do for now.
I love the cat watching the weeds!! ![]()
This is awesome. Keep up the good work!
Setup should be stable for a couple weeks, I said. Lord, am I ever right about anything? Between growth and transplanting to bigger pots, I keep having to shift around pots and lights and mylar…
I don’t have room for all five vegging plants anymore, so I’m going to give one to my sister (also in MA) to raise. By the time my remaining four outgrow this space in two or three weeks, I’ll have them down in the sunroom with space and light galore.
Humidity’s at 40% even after a night with the door shut and the humidifier running. Is that low enough to worry, or should I let them tough it out 'til spring?
Hey Lia,
If you use aluminum foil; You are supposed to place the dull side at the plants to keep from have hot spots and burning leaves. Best not to start something burning in a grow room ![]()
Welcome to the forum, lw
If that’s the best you can get then I guess they have to tuff it out for a few more weeks you could try misting air in room to help keep humidity up but try not to soak carpets and what not in room if you do try it
Trying to get the humidity up, I cranked the humidifier to max. Got home from work, there’s a puddle in front of the humidifier, RH is at 57%, and the plants are HAPPY.
I also watered today, so it’s all about the moisture. Feels like a swamp in the veg room.
Turned the humidifier back to medium, put it closer to the fan for better circulation, and dried the wood floor.
Meanwhile, in the flower room:
Baby humidifier ran out of water. Got it running again, and the girls are recovering from their burns.
Whew what a busy day! I thought this stuff practically grows itself?
@Lia your plants look great! I have the opposite problem (high humidity) and house entry smells like piney marijuana forest as soon as hubby comes home
…ventilation supplies can’t arrive soon enough!
