I ended up using a recipe from Ruffhouse Studios because it used coconut oil and made a small portion:
1/2 teaspoon Lecithin
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup water
1 ounce unflavored gelatin
6 ounces flavored gelatin.
They said that made about 230 gummies, so I cut the recipe in half since I only have 2 molds, which makes 100 gummies.
1/4 teaspoon Lecithin (I used powdered Lecithin)
2 tablespoons coconut oil
1/4 cup water
1/2 ounce (2 packets) unflavored gelatin
3 ounces (1 package) flavored gelatin. (I used berry flavor)
Instructions:
Decarb cannabis
Put cannabis, lecithin and oil into jar/container. You might need twice as much oil as the recipe calls for because of loss during extraction. Cover with foil to keep down the smell. Put into a water bath and cook in the oven at 250°F for 2 hours.
Pour the solution into a strainer over a measuring cup. Press the oil by using a spoon or something small.
Put water and the infused oil into a small saucepan. Put on low heat. Whisk oil and water together. Slowly whisk the unflavored gelatin in until it is well mixed. Then, whisk in the flavored gelatin. Keep whisking and cooking for 5-8 minutes.
Spray the molds with cooking spray. Fill the molds. Periodically mix the product while doing this.
Put in the freezer for 20 minutes or the refrigerator for 1 hour.
Here is the cannabis, oil and lecithin mix after being in the water bath at 250°F for 2 hours. I used 1/4 cup (twice what the recipe called for) of oil to account for potential extraction loss.
I used a spoon to press on the solids and squeeze at least another 25% of fluid out of it. I wound up with just over 2 tablespoons (what the recipe called for) of liquid.
I then followed the instructions for mixing everything together, heating it and dispensing it into the molds. Things go very quickly at this point, so there was no time to take photos.
I immediately found that the oversized dropper that the molds came with was worthless - the mixture is too thick for it to be able to pull much up into itself.
It went pretty well at first, but I found that the mixture was getting thick and sticky before I could finish. I tried both less heat and more heat, but it didn’t seem to remedy the situation. I definitely need to find a way to be quicker. I also wonder if it would have stayed fluid longer if I had used the full recipe (twice as much volume in the saucepan).
At the end, I had no choice but to pour what was left in the saucepan directly on to the mold (left side in the photo below) because I was running out of time before it got too solid to work with. I then just ran a butter knife across the top of the mold to get the liquid into the mold.
I put it in the refrigerator for an hour, then popped the gummies out of the mold. I was able to easily cut apart the mess that I poured into the mold. Those don’t look pretty, but the effects are still the same.
It’s too late to edit my post above with the recipe in it, so I will just note here:
I used 5 grams of my ground up, decarboxylated cannabis in the recipe.
As far as the results…
A friend and I both tried one gummy. We both had a bit of the giggles in about 30 minutes, but nothing more. After one hour, we both tried another. Now, things really kicked in. We both found ourselves in a dissociative state for about 5 hours. It was definitely strong!
I think next time I will just try one-and-a-half gummies and see how it works out…
When I put into those small molds I use the same syringe but I also use a hand warmer to help keep it liquid. Bigger tablespoon molds I use glass measuring cup that I put boiling water into before using to help keep it liquid.
Thanks for the recipe. I might give that a whirl. You said 5 grams. That is less than a 1/4 ounce. I think that is like an 1/8 ounce. I wonder if 5 grams of shatter would do the same?
@TommyBahama, I found the tiny dropper that came with the molds was pretty worthless for the purpose of filling the gummy’s. I found a 2.5 ounce jello shooter syringe on Amazon, and this works ideally. You can fill lots of molds with one fill-up, so it goes quickly. The syringes come in a pack of 25 and hold 2.5 ounces each. I have found lots of additional uses for these syringes, so they are a good item to have around.
@Bubblehead is correct you’ll want to use double or more when using trim and larf as it’s not as potent thc wise as buds. You’ll want to decarb in the oven first so that would basically dry it. @Amjk
Thanks @Cyle1 it was just after that that I figured out how much 5 grams of shatter really is. I am thinking it would take about an ounce of bud to make 5 grams of shatter.
