You had the right idea it is the timing that matters added N can actually inhibit bud development so treating a late Cal def can actually do more harm than good. Some necrosis late in flower is perfectly normal and a sign ladies are getting nearer finish line
In that case should I stop feeding calmag entirely? Itās 1-0-0. I was planning on stopping it next week (week 8).
Good question!
Like I posted earlier, I use nitrogen free so I wouldnāt have the slightest idea.
The low doses you are using are fine if you were using 5-10ml as many do in veg I would say yes but you have a good handle on your dosing so donāt second guess yourself The ladies look good and if you didnāt see some necrosis by now I would be concerned since plants would be too hard to flush or phospho weed full of minerals
Well that makes me feel a lot better. Thanks Donald. You have a good way of keeping me from getting to the ledge before you need to talk me off of it.
In my āstudiesā I did find this interesting (and perhaps relevant) study:
If you are growing in a sterile res some products may or may not cause issues when added so depending on source of Cal also if things arenāt broke donāt fix them 8 weeks on a 9-10 week strain if you donāt have some leaf death that smoke will be harsh as acid if it burns
There are 2 kinds of leaf necrosis we watch for in flower first being early in flower which starts with yellowing of lower and less useful leaves which arenāt getting enough light. Your plant is reabsorbing nutrients and canablizing these leaves they donāt show def they simply start to lose their green wilt and pretty much fall off when touched. Second later stage necrosis is after leaves have discolored (fall colors) they are more rigid and is more likely to show some signs of def as bud development is more targeted in the nutrients it is seeking but has very low need for N craving instead PK which leads more to purple stems dying leaves with necrotic spots rather than leaves going limp and simply falling off at 4-6 weeks this would signify major issue since bulk of bud development is in that window with fattening continuing only for week or so after and no new leaf or bud site growth after. So it is all timing late stage feeds bud ripening early stage equals Oh Shite !! we have an issue
Oh for sure, Iām dirt ball so you know thatās whole different world. Gotta be way ahead of the game to even be considering that stuff.
I was more pointing out future endeavors. As @Bogleg converts the rest of his room to cobs, I see real potential for this to happen earlier and more pronounced. Iām not exactly sure what the best way to combat that in hydro, but as you pointed out the nitrogen a lot of the supplements contain can be an issue.
simple ppm and res size adjustments if plants are eating or wanting more you adjust ppm to suit metabolism everything is just tweaks
I am confident I can find calmag supps that are N free if I look a little bit - itās something I will make sure i have in my back pocket for the future.
Looking good
Good morning all.
Today markās the 123rd day since the seeds sprouted. It is the 61st day since the lights were switched to 12/12, and it is the 45thday since I first noticed flowers.
This morning I added nutes back into the SSH reservoir. I set her at 840 ppm and a PH of 6.05. My nutrient mix consisted if (per gallon):
2.5ml Calmag
5ml Micro
15ml Bloom
5ml Liquid Koolbloom
6ml Flora Nectar
I added that same mixture to the GL and her PPM came out at 1260. Iām going to leave her there and see how she responds.
No significant changes in the plants. However, last night I was poking around inspecting things and noticed that the heater was doing a number on the buds/branches that were closest to it. My resolution was to yo-yo some of those branches up and away from the heater. There is a lot of bud on the backside of this plant! (Baby got back?)
I only found a couple more leaves that had that necrotic/cal deficiency look to them. They are gone now.
The GL is still plugging along.
Her big colas are starting to turn on the bottom. Iām wondering if Iām going to end up in one of those āheat and light stressā sitautions where they keep pumping out white pistils even though they are finishing.
If you suspect that, you can shorten the day cycle below 12/12 as another way to reduce light.
I was considering doing that to help the GL along⦠maybe Iāll try 11/13. We will see how the rest of the week plays out and next week, then decide.
Thatās the schedule Iām on now.
Jeez, Iāve been following that front cola since you put cobs in, sheās getting fat! I could only imagine now with the panels shifted more to the back youāre getting some good swell too.
Itās hard to say on the fresh pistil production. When your stuff is jiving along well, theyāll usually make a solid push right before they taper off. Thatās the plant identifying it near end of life cycle, trying to do whatever she can to get pollen. Itās also the part of the grow a lot of people get duped into missing out on. You can certainly notice the swell even from last week.
Just keep an eye on whatās going on, wouldnāt sweat it too much. Youāve been solid, and itās paying off.
Yeah the GL is starting to ripen. I think these next ten days she is going to start showing her true colors. On the SSH side Iām actually pretty happy with the amount of bud on her. If she does indeed have another 3-4 weeks she could make me very happy.
Good morning all.
Today markās the 124th day since the seeds sprouted. It is the 62nd day since the lights were switched to 12/12, and it is the 46th day since I first noticed flowers.
Not much to report today, except for one of my mistakes. First, just topped off the plants with plain water today. The Gold Leafe is now at a PH of 5.85 and a PPM of 1060. She drank over a gallon of water since yesterday and her PPMs went down 200⦠Her PH didnāt crash very much over the past 24 hours yesterday either.
The SSH is now at 6.02 and 1020. She also didnāt crash PH since the flush - has stayed stable (not rising much either). She took less water (maybe a gallon).
Sorry those pics seem a little blurry.
On the āclone to flowerā front my little clone seems to be kicking out a little more weight:
Sheās a testament to the hardiness of these plants, because if youāll recall she was basically ignored most of her young life.
Now, to address the an obvious oversight on my part (lesson learnedā¦). I had the back of the SSH plant really close to my heater. I donāt normally go over and open that side of the tent because I donāt really have a reason to (the other side is where I can access most of the power cords and get at the clone). But Iāve been going back there to check leaves, pluck as necessary, etc⦠anyway I noticed that I was getting some heat damage to leaves awhile back but just plucked them off and didnāt think much of it.
Well, you might recall a couple of days ago I decided to look more closely and discovered thereās a lot of bud back there. To get the bud-laden branches away from the heater I had to cut away some of my SCROG and use some yo-yos:
At this point itās safe to say I completely lost control of the SSH SCROG attempt. Hereās what a couple of those branches I pulled away from the heater look like from the āviewerā side:
I donāt think Iāll lose any medicine as a result of this but itās something to account for and plan for on the next grow.
