Some folks do fine with OF, but we do see a fair amount of growers that post problems with it. My opinion is that it is best used for the final transplant when the plant is already matured.
It’s not uncommon for older leaves to have cosmetic issues. I wouldn’t worry about it if the rest of the plant is healthy.
Calcium and magnesium are secondary nutrients and should be used sparingly.
@MattyBear I was planning to finish the plants in the 5 gallon pots – feels like that might change now as they still have lots of growing to do (imo)
I tend to move slowly and deliberately, so just so I understand my next steps:
- Transplant to 5 gallon pots
- Stop watering with CalMag and instead just straight RO water PH’d at 6.5
- Anything else I’m missing?
I feel like I will end up transplanting them one more time before they go into flower into 7gal containers? Or will I still be able to finish them in 5gal pots?
Go right into 7 gal cloth pots.
I’d use straight ocean forest.
Hold back on the cal mag until you see signs of deficiency. It’ll probably happen as they go into flower.
They’re large enough now to be potted into their final pots. Once roots fill up the pot, growth will slow down but once you pot them up, they will take off. If you’re growing in soil, you should have a good amount of stored calcium, but might have to supplement calmag once the stored calcium is depleted
I’ve already got the 5 gal pots so I’ll roll with these for now, I think I should have enough soil without making an extra trip as well. Double bonus.
I’ll buy two 7 gallon pots for the next grow. 5 plants in 7 gallon bags I don’t think my room could handle that jungle. Thinking toward that perpetual grow though… Would it make sense to veg 2 plants in 3-gallon pots, while 2 plants flower in 7-gallon pots? And keep a mother plant perpetual veg in a 3gal if I wanted to?
I sense that I could grow 2 small trees in seven gallons.
@MattyBear A million thankyou’s for the assist on this as well as @MrPeat
Cheers!
My repot cycle is: Solo cup, 1 gal plastic container, 7 gal cloth pot final home.
I use the plastic containers initially because they’re a lot easier to remove the plant without damaging roots.
5 gal cloth pots are also fine.
My rationale for using 3gal pots in veg would be to control the size of the plant if the flowering chamber isn’t immediately available? Perhaps this fear is unfounded and going 1gal → 7gal is best practice? Regardless it seems 7gal pots are in my future. Also need to start tying down branches.
I’m stoked about repotting today though!! Wasn’t expecting to have to do that, but honestly love working with the dirt. Very therapeutic for me.
I’m the oddball. I go from the seeds with tap root straight into their forever home. No transplanting for me. I can’t wait to grow in a 15 gallon fabric pot.
Your grows inspire me!!! I hope I can grow some twin-pine, tree-like monster that you do. What size fabric pot do you grow in currently?
I’m growing in 5 gallon buckets filled about 1/2 full with FFOF.
So you’re growing in 2.5 gallons of soil? And you’re growing 76" monsters???
@OG_Kenobi Here is what the roots looked like on my GSC Beast.
There was so much roots I pulled out the entire 2.5 gallons of soil. I couldn’t break the soil up at all.
Holy schmoleys man!!! She’s def a big girl! You’ve got me nervous about how much my 5 are going to stretch when their time comes…
…speaking of which. I went ahead and transplanted the girls into 5 gallon pots using the same mix of FFOF, compost/wormcast etc. I didn’t think to snap a picture of the roots, honestly just wanted to get them in their new home and not fuss with it too much, but there was a healthy amount of roots wrapped around the sides and less at the bottom.
I black-gloved everything, sprayed the “landing zone” with pH’d water and gave them a quick foliar spray before putting them back under the light which I dimmed to about 60% strength.
Cheers to my beautiful assistant who had the presence to think to transfer the blue nametags as I was doing the dirtywork.
Never ever underestimate a GSC grow. She is a real beast. I couldn’t imagine having 5. I will tell you from personal experience. You will need to stay on top of these plants or you will have a jungle like I do. The plants will grow and wrap themselves around each other. That means the tops need to be Scrog. Because those plants will make it impossible to get light in the center to bottom of the plants. I had to pull one because she was so loaded and way to weak.
I never mentioned it, but these seeds are Sour Diesel from Cali Connection. I am definitely going the Scrog route, not sure if I need to bother with an LST as well, or if I can just weave the branches into an even canopy without it. Thoughts?
Sheesh and I’m going to need another LED panel sooner than later as well
You can Scrog without actually Scrogging. I did it with my GSC Beast. You could do a couple Fim’s so you get more Colas then Scrog.
