Switching to coco

Not trying to get into an argument but I am curious why you say coconut coir needs feeding at least once a day?
My coconut coir mix is usually damp for several days after I water it so why do people recommend watering every day?

Good Morning,

What a way to start the day, lol. At least I have coffee for this.

There’s nothing to argue about. It is what it is. I have moms in coco that only feed 1-2 times a week too. To control growth. It also damages roots over time, causes fluctuations in medium and imbalances… Just because sometimes you can get away with things doesn’t mean you should, at least not with a production run. In my production runs, I have to feed in coco 5 times a day by peak. Coco is a hydroponic medium and needs to be treated as such. It’s the entire point.

Let’s get into this.

Coco coir is an inert medium made from coconut husks, excellent aeration, drainage, and water retention but requires added nutrients. It’s a hydroponic medium.

Soil is a natural, nutrient-rich medium that supports plant growth with organic matter and microorganisms, requiring less fertilization but varying in water retention and aeration.

Cation Exchange Capacity…. a medium’s ability to hold and exchange nutrients. Soil typically has a higher CEC due to its organic matter and clay content, allowing it to retain more nutrients for plants. Coco coir has a lower CEC but buffers potassium and sodium, requiring precise nutrient management to avoid imbalances while ensuring plants get what they need. Because it is a hydroponic medium with limited nutrient-holding capacity, plants rely on frequent waterings to access nutrients and maintain hydration. In contrast, soil retains water and nutrients for longer periods due to its organic matter and higher Cation Exchange Capacity, reducing the need for frequent watering.

If you don’t feed coco coir daily, plants can face nutrient deficiencies because coco is inert and holds no nutrients on its own. Underfeeding, imbalance of nutrient consumption. Over time, salt buildup from fertilizers can occur, leading to toxic conditions and nutrient lockout. coco dries out quickly due to its drainage, causing root dehydration and stress. Inconsistent watering can also disrupt coco’s natural buffering capacity, leading to pH imbalances that make nutrients unavailable. Regular daily feeding is essential to maintain hydration, nutrient supply, and overall plant health in coco coir. 90-100% saturation is generally coco coir’s sweet spot when at peak in a run. Which means an introduction of fresh nutrients, air, and water needs to be introduced more frequently to prevent salt build up, suffocation, and pH fluctuations. Temperature swings in the medium also can cause changes in ppms and pH so that should also be consistent and regulated.

I’m pretty sure I went over this above further in depth, if not here… somewhere on the forum.

Have a good day all!

Getting closer to our next run cannafam!!

Ideally having a reservoir available makes it easier. salts are pretty consistent with minimal drift. yes all parameters should be controlled, within reason. Usually comes down to more or less runoff.

This is our chart, ignore that “cbd” that’s supposed to be CBN. Just a compiled list.

This is also helpful in understanding how to control medium in high frequency feed (1+ events per day.) however this can also apply to feeding soil. This information is gold.

I’m happy to hear things are looking up! That’s awesome :sunglasses:

Morning @Low thank you for that you explained it way better than I ever could

Ahh- it’s no problem. Treating mediums appropriately is the whole point of going a specific direction. Whether soil (with salts or organic,) soilless, or straight hydro there are procedures in place to justify those differences. Negating those procedures generally adds up to an underperforming crop and or problems.

That was my thought if you treat coco like soil you are missing out on the benefits of both

Thank you, that is very good advice, and very similar to what I feel. It’s a wonderful thing building that connection with someone, working towards the same goal together, and knowing someone has your back through thick and thin. 20 years is impressive, I’m happy for you @JPhoenixX

Haha I completely understand that also. There are so many strains I want to try growing, and it feels like a new journey every time! Popping seeds is one of the nicest and most magical parts of the grow for me. I got this beauty called Peyote Wifi lined up for this grow, it has a possibility of making black/dark gray buds, especially if conditions are right! Looking forward to it!

That’s a really nice and lighthearted attitude, which makes sense to look at it that way. Life is tough enough, so it’s cool not making a mountain out of a molehill on other things when possible.

This was a really enjoyable and informative read @Low, thoroughly explained.

Same to you my friend, best wishes for the new grow!

Cheers @Low, greatly appreciated

Checking trichomes today what do you folks think

I know I got some clear ones still but it’s starting to amber. I’m getting real antsy to get her out of the tent. I feel like I went from a wannabe farmer to a hungry ape searching for bananas. Every time I open the tent I start saying nanner nanner nanner nanner…BATMANNN
I need to stop that lol

I’m unhooking her from the res and do just water, give her a little flush.

I’m going to wait till Sunday… Try and wait till Sunday… Maybe lol

Sounds like a good plan. I do a 3 day flush before chop too.

Timber!!! :joy::joy::joy::yum:

Final group photo

She went from a big plant to a big pile

Now she’s hanging out in the closet

I only took the top portion, figured I would try a selective harvest. I found a bunch of big buds in the center that needed some more time. I wouldn’t normally waste time on that but the ATF is still plugging away so the tent is still set for flowering anyway.

Thanks guys it was a fun grow I learned a lot.
I plucked off a little nug yesterday it smoked really well considering it just got chopped Monday, I’m excited for when it’s all cured up lol

I’m gonna say this one was a success 14 ozs and I’m going to chop the rest of it later today. I think there is at least an oz maybe 2 left on the plant. I still have the ATF finishing up in there so I went way past my goal.

And this is just wild to me

Thank you helping and hanging out along the way @Gl1tch @Low @MagicCultivator420 @DRsDank @DoneDeal

Awesome, nice haul! Congrats :sunglasses:

Well done bro. Keep an eye on those buds if your jarring them up now. With a 6 day dry you may still have a mold risk. That’s a terrible lesson to learn the hard way.
