I will pray for your friend with the cancer. I have prostate cancer and just came back yesterday with great results from my surgery and started my grows.
I am not so sure you should suggest hydroponics for your friend. I have very serious back problems from three surgical procedures and am finding out the soil is the easiest. Changing out water and constant monitoring of the conditions is very much work and lifting. I will decide after these new grows of 3 hydroponics, and 2 in soil.
As I said before I was a sheet metal fabrication mechanic for 20 years and was shot by the time I was 40 with alot of problems. I had 2 Army schools of high tech electronics under my belt but couldnāt land a job using it. But started building electrical control panels for security and commercial robotic systems to finish out my time.
I started fighting rematoid arthritis at 35 and I was completely shot when I retired at 65. I just had surgery 35 done.

The reason for feeding 1/2 feeding as you know others have trouble with burning up their plants because of the FoxFarm soils are amended and can have plants go up to 3 to 4 weeks off of the soil alone. If fed full nutrients right away will burn your plants from to high of PPM or nutrients.
This morning my first run off was just as I said high enough to go 4 weeks when tested. If you want instead of running thru the 4 gallons of water to reduce the PPM to safety start feeding you can just start with Calmag and water.
Alot of people prefer to water thru the soil down is so they can start out feeding their choice of nutrients. Somtimes I water thru somtimes donāt depending on what I am doing. The main thing to do is water enough in the 5 gallon pot to avoid dry spots in your pot. 1 to 2 gallon is usually good just check your run off PPM and referance the chart they gave you at the top for 1st week read and decide.
I just am getting my soils started this a.m. watered thru. I am safe with my run thur to start full feedings after checking as I sent you at 1.30 E.C. I have two seeds in paper towel in the pic. FACE FAT, GREASE GUN.
I have three in hydroponics 1 week old two in DWC buckets 1 TRI CROSS, 1 FROOT BY THE FOOT. 1 in my big tote which is slow for one week from the others is BLUE DREAM.

Okay so if Iām ready Iāll probably end up doing it here soon or tomorrow because I wonāt be able to later this weekend.
With this being said Iām going to fill my pots with the bottom layer ocean forest and top layer happy frog. I will run 1-2 gal of water through each pot. Now on the chart it says 700-840 I think and so Iāll just run water through it till I get a runoff of between 700-840. After I will transfer the plant to the pot? Then let it dry and then start with 1/2 the serving for week 1 ?(Except wholly mackerel and kelp me kelp you).
Also your grow setup looks awesome! Plants are looking good! If you donāt mind me asking what are the green wires that are on the buckets?

Okay well I flushed with ph water both with 4-5 gallons. The Ppms of the first pot couldnāt seem to go down so Iāll let it dry and go from there. My other pot had 5 gal as well and came out 814. Letting them dry and then transferring!

Now as you see how much soils are amended, as I said If you want to start feeding nutrients flush down to a safe run off.
If you donāt want to feed nutrients just water through and you got 4 weeks of food for your plant.
I think you will befine to feed 1/2 feeding 1 week then go at them with a full feeding.
I have used water only soils that are ammended for the whole grow. Just add water. No feedings of nutrients are needed.
