Oderus’ grow journal. (More for community assistance)

Hello, i am going to try to run a journal so I can hopefully absorb some feedback/opinions of best practices.

This is my 3rd grow, 1st one pulled way early, 2nd one I think i pulled slightly early but still quality enough for me to stop going to the store.

I am going for it on my 3rd attempt with some sour D and Wizard Punch.

Sour D getting the nebula manifold
Wizard punch trying 2nd attempt of scrog(made a mistake last scrog dont think i understood the tucking process)

Nutes/supplements:

Extreme gardening Mykos for initial rooting
Fox farm base nutrient trio
Terpinator

Sour D setup:

3x3 tent
(2) sf 2000 quantum lights
Humidifier
Dehumidifier
Spider farmer GGS system
(2) clip fans
Fountain pump with .5 gph drip line

Wizard Punch exactly the same setup except:

2x4 tent
(1) SE-4500 320w bar light

Day 20 from germination.

Removed a couple monstrous fan leave from the wizard punch lowest node. Also added the screen a bit early. Gonna keep the screen 7” above the dirt. Using hog wire cuz the net was a huge pain in the ass last time. the rigid wire I’m hoping will make it much easier to train.

It grew taller than I was expecting. But since I started with too much light the first week it must be the way it grows as opposed to stretching I’m assuming. Also have some yellow tips on the new growth. Maybe the light was too close? Soil still a bit too hot? Not concerned at this time.

Sour D seems fine. bent down the arms to hopefully begin setting the manifold.

Using distilled water with 6.5 ph. No nutes yet.

You will see a lot of variations on how to do this. None of them are wrong for any specific reason, but the easiest way to a large producing full scrog is to just keep everything under the trellis until it’s about full. Then go in and clean up your canopy and direct one healthy top to each square in trellis and send to flower.

Follow link below for example. There is probably some very good tips in the topic if you want to take some time and read from the beginning.

Thank you for that description. Finally explained in a way i believe I understand.

Day 21

Decided I am going to aggressively prune and train both to keep it under control. If they die I will be less aggressive on the next run.

Turned up lights today to 500 ppfd for the WP. 550 ppfd for the sour D. Co2 is often elevated naturally because I dont supplement. Sometimes i wonder if they are accurate but they both read very close to the same in separate tents.

Sour D i am going to manifold for 16 colas per the nebula tutorial. My main goal is to fill the space as much as possible and spread out the branches, if possible I’m gonna spread the branches out in a 30” diameter flat then throw into flower. Does that sound appropriate?

Sour D 2nd topping more pruning and heavy training:

Wizard Punch also pruned and trained as best i can. A low screen is going to present problems when hand watering. I feel like running my fox farm nutes through the fountain pumps aren’t working from my last grow. So I run regular water through the pumps and use a can for the nutes cuz i fell like i can control settling better. Also wondering if i should just remove lower branches and scrog the new pided stem.

Is there an available watering system that works well with nutes?

Wizard punch after pruning and attempting to train. Much taller than the sour D:

What i thought was day 24 is more like day 30 or so. Sprouted on 9/27 ish.

I am actually 24 days from transplanting.

Final toppings today, probably could have waited another day or two for that. But if the first 2 didn’t kill them this one wont either. Topped each plant 3 times. Seems to be growing slow but may be an optical illusion due to the preemptive pruning also. Anyway only thing left moving forward is training till flower. I feel like im gonna hate the scrog again but we shall see.

Not anticipating any issues, probably gonna start nutes in 2 weeks im thinking.

Seem to still be having slight ph issues but switched to spring water from distilled this week. Just gonna use ph’d tap water with nutes when I start feeding.

Got some gary payton from the store to compare to my last harvest. Mine is better in every respect and I feel i just missed the mark.

Day 40 ish from sprout:

First water to runoff 2 days ago. Seemed to really kickstart the growth. Topping complete on both. Going to try to prune regularly to keep the canopy clean.

Mixed grow big and big bloom together in my spring water. Dont know if the big bloom is affecting the color of the ph tester drops. Having a difficult time reading the schedule. Bought a PH pen a few weeks ago that seemed to only work once. Now it reads high and takes forever to drop down and not sure it’s accurate. Drops give instant feedback.

My runoff was ph 5 ish. Please advise.

Heat is going to be an issue in flower. Getting up to high 80’s. Maybe that will stay lower as the plant starts to flower and has more foliage?

Seemed the sour d was perhaps developing PM on the fan leaves when following VPD guidelines. Seed supplier said no humidity above 60% for sour d. So just moved it back to that. But it pulls me completely out of ideal vpd range. Although the funny looking blemishes on the fan leaves disappeared.

The temps in the tent require 75 - 80% RH to keep things in VPD range during the day, 2 fans in each tent but didn’t seem to prevent the “growth” on the sour d fan leaves. Wizard punch is fine now andnit was the one showing problems early.

Hey brother your girls look great :+1: but I gotta say you do the exact opposite from what I do lol  I can’t wait on training etc.
I don’t know what questions you have, but would be glad to help in any way possible my friend, I read thru and it seems like you are doing fine.
I don’t worry about ph rh and a lot of other things that make growing a chore, I do things simple its just a plant, I don’t complicate it. I do check ppms to gage feed levels.
But holler at me and let me anytime, I’ll be following along here brother, glad to watch your progress.
Have a great day my friend :innocent: @Oderus

But you said you were close to topping yes?

I have lots of time on my hands lately, that changes next week with a new job.

I have 2 goals:

  1. I want the bud to taste good. I buy “high THC”. Strains with the assumption i may get close to 20%. THC content is totally secondary to flavor but i still want some kick.

  2. I want to have it totally automated for when i am at work. I want decent yield but its only me and i have enough to get me through next harvest which im hoping is finally gonna be the results im looking for.

My 2nd grow was good enough to keep me from the dispensary but not quite there yet. Decent flavor, decent potency, but not long lasting. I think i pulled just a tad early.

So here are some questions

  1. What is the best way to control heat in flower?
  2. Do i lights off while at work during the day?
  3. If during the day how do I control the heat? The spider farmer system has a lights off function for heat but I’m afraid that could herm the plant due to constant heat overruns.
  4. Dude at the grow shop told me it is ok to combine grow big and big bloom in the same gallon for feeding. Is this correct?
  5. What is the opinion on alternating nutes/tap water for irrigation? Seemed to work very well on my outside plant this summer till the worms infested it. It was still lush green 2 weeks before harvest when i trashed it lol.
  6. What should my runoff PH be?
  7. My temps dont really get to 90 in the tent but close. Is that going to significantly affect the flavor of the buds?

They are in huge 10 gallon pots so i bet they only will need water 1x/week

Got ya my friend, I am tied up this evening but will be up late so I will get back to you later.
Have a great evening my friend @Oderus

Example, light has been on for 75 minutes. i know its fine in veg, but when i increase light it’s gonna get up there

Yes Sir I top once at the 11th node leaving 10 sets of branches, this turns a Christmas tree shaped plant into a even canopy where all the branches main colas are all the same height  it also stops upward growth so the side branches can catch up with the upper branches during the stretch.
I have 20 branches and if I get 1/4 oz each I can yield 5 oz per plant.
Hey brother I hope you don’t get too busy with the new job that it interferes with your grow.
Okay the way I keep my temperatures down during lights on is to run my lights when I can open the doors where fans can keep temps down. I get up at 8am and I open the door and when lights go out at 8pm (during flower) I close the door, I also run fans 24 7 during flower to keep from getting mold especially during late flower. Mind you I don’t have any ventilation for air exchange, so opening the door is all I can do.
During veg lights on at 2am and still off at 8pm and temperatures rise a little while the doors are closed but these plants are okay with high heat, in our outside grows above 100* sometimes show heat stress, but they are very hearty and can take a lot even super high VDP. You have to water like a bitch but they do produce in high temps and low rh.
As far as thc, I have no idea how much my plants would test, but I feel if you have good genetics, you are going to have good tricome development, proper lighting and nutrients, and your doing all you can.
Hey I had a bro who used foxfarm trio grow big big bloom and tiger bloom, to my understanding the big bloom is not necessarily a flowering nutes, it does go with the grow big together during veg, then adding tiger bloom during flower, and yes you mix x amount of GB x amount of BB and x amount of TB per gallon of water using the table they recommend, using however many gallons to water to run off per feed. I don’t recommend feeding 100% strength with fox farm nutes 75% is safer, my buddy burned some plants up during flower. And feed, water, feed is typical
I know people say ph should be a 6.5 , but I do not worry about ph, sometimes during flower it bits me in the ass with burning and spotted leafs but mostly it doesn’t bother me, and I pour my water in at over 8 ph, another way I am a simple grow.
Flavor of your weed is how you dry and cure, here in the desert we don’t have great drying temperatures and rh so I developed my own way to slow down the drying process, allowing the cloriphil to gas off keeping the weed from tasting like hay etc, then either burp bags every few days for a month or so allowing the cloriphil gases out and fresh air in, grove bags allow cloriphil gases to escape through the plastic they designed so you don’t have to burp to get rid of cloriphil.
Slow drying process and good cure is how to have great tasting weed :face_savoring_food:
Last but not least is the 10 gallon bags and watering, one thing I need to point out is So above so below! Your root system is going to mirror your canopy. So if your plant is 6 inches tall and 6 inches in diameter, roots are only going to grow close to the same 6x6 deep and around.
You need to wet to run off and lift pot to see how heavy it is, and feel how much a light pot is after a couple to a few days, fox farm soils are well draining and will not hold moisture in cloth bags that allow air to permeate from all sides, don’t allow to dry completely, I never allow my root zone to dry out, it stresses the plant. Oxygen is a good thing for roots but too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.
Anyway brother its getting late and I think I touched on everything except you mentioned automation for when you are at work.
I don’t know anything about top watering systems but I have a friend who uses bottom watering system, he has auto pots and loves them.
I ran out of stoned so restoned myself and going to relax a bit  hope you had a great day my friend and I will catch you later :victory_hand:goodnight :innocent: hope I was helpful bro

I tried auto pots last time. Seemed the wicks stopped working after a short period of time and it was all wrapped up in a bad scrog. Now i am just using them as a runoff collector and have a hand siphon to empty them

Maybe that’s my problem lol. I do the same thing never occurred to me it was cuz i was stoned.
