Newbie .. potting soil amount question

So I am using 3 gallon smart pots in a 4x4 grow tent. While planting the seedlings my friend suggested not using all of the medium in this process and adding it after a few weeks . Is this common? I have not seen any topics on this so I’m asking here thanks

I apologize in advance the pic that’s attached is the one from my other tent however the amount of soil is the same .

Fill the pot to about 3" below the rim. This will give you space to add soil if needed and leave plenty of room for roots.

And if you didn’t already, it’s good to mix in perlite to help with drainage and oxygen to the roots

Thanks guys for medium I’m using Mother Nature coco perlite and fox farm ocean forest . It’s an even mix of the 2
