The furthest I have dipped my toe into hydro is a couple of autopots, coco ad Jack’s.
Time to defoliate a bit, this blue dream is about a foot tall max and already has 13 point leaves at the top. Side branches overcoming the top and i havent topped the plant yet. [Processing: Going to have a wall of green in about 2 months
Gelato Runtz at 11 points 10 " tall
Girl Scout Cookies wont strech, stem is about a quarter in diamiter. 8" with 11 points. This and the other GSC were slower to the root game than the others. Might increase res temp a degree.
Very nice…looks awesome
@Jarlax I am with you, it is time to do some trimming and branch selection…they look so pretty when they are full like this but with that fullness can come sweating and sweating produces mold…and besides MJ loves a good haircut and will grow better for you IMHO.
If u defol be scarce on doing it. Stand over them looking down if a big leaf is covering a potential site and cannot be tucked out the way then remove it. Other than try and tuck as much as u can until u can’t no more more leaves more work the plant can do
Interesting take on this, the first time i’ve heard this method. Admittedly, I’m on my third grow. I’ve accomplished not killing them. I’ve been looking at some pretty amazing examples from the community here on training, i think this is where i want to focus my energy now that ive managed to create an environment that requires almost no work to maintain. Up till now i was always fire fighting something, but i literally went straight to RDWC and never grew in dirt or anything.
@Jarlax as you are seeing everyone has a different slant on what they do and it works for them in how they do things…I personally say if the fan leaf is blocking a branch/bud site from growing , remove it…if a fan leaf is facing inside remove it and once I get my second trellis going ( one set at 18 inches and second at 36 inches) if anything is growing on a branch below the first trellis remove it. I also go by the no more than 30% foliage removed at any one time… Once I start trimming usually at day 20, I find in hydro if things are dialed in you can trim every day all the way to final harvest.
@Retiredoldguy by chance would you mind if i could ask about branch selection…Ha! Perfect man thanks so much. Beat me to the punch.
@Jarlax you can see which branches grow and which don’t…I cut the ones that are not growing no matter how much it hurts to do this…we all want each branch to grow and develop a beautiful cola but in reality that will no happen…so we help her with cutting the sucker branches off at an early stage…just watch and you can tell which branches she likes and which she doesn’t…the ones she likes grow fast and are thick and strong…
I chop the branches that don’t make it exceed atleast the bottom third of plant. Top 2 thirds I leave be but if it don’t make a third the way up it’s gone I do do the same with leaves thru the center of plant defoling them as there is no need as the light barely hits them plus thinning the center helps the airflow better and prevents wpm or mold issues
@Mark0427 @Retiredoldguy Thanks for the tips guys. The last two times, i would cut leaves, but avoided cutting any stems. This makes sense, and i totally get the diversity of what everyones favorite way is. I actually like having different things tossed at me, allows you to think through and combine the best of everyone. Thinned these out some yesterday. Letting them rest a day, and tomorrow i will work on some of the branches a luttle more. Just started measureing light also, think the GSC didnt like 1100 ppfd lol. All of them had signs of light stress when i started looking. Lights were all to close.
Gelato Runtz, Blue Dream, Bruce Banner. Small signs of light stress at the top.
GSC and Girilla Glue more sensitive to light is my guess as the mechanism for slower roots on the GCS. The GG didnt want to really take off yet like the other 3 either.
@Jarlax I finally got a light meter ( Photone app ) and I am using it on this grow and I can already see my plants like it better than my old school hand too hot technique…old dogs can learn new tricks
They’re looking great! Still dreaming of a space like that!
Have you thought about scrogging those girls?
Keep’em growin!
@HappyHydroGrower i didnt even know what that was until i started looking here.Currently, when they start getting heavy i tie the pistils off to the floor joyces in the ceiling. I saw a SCROG setup here today where guy used PVC as a frame. Definetly got me thinking. On the space thing, yea i got lucky when i bought this house. Grow room is 30L x 13Wx 8H. Run the fans/lights off a 50 amp 220 breaker running only single phase 110. Have outlets in the ceiling over each light
@Jarlax …thats what i did…1/2" sch 40 pvc
@NUG61 thats awesome. So by observation the overall concept is to tie the branches off to the net and spread it out?
Not so much tie them off but tuck them under and let the buds grow upwards. Keep tucking til full then flip
Tuck or tie some people do one or the other some people do both because it gets out of control…lol but the object is to expose all the bud sites on the branch evenly… tricking every site into thinking it’s a top Cola and growing vertically… tucking the branches until the table is full and you flip to flower and let everything go vertical
