Yeah my dad and my uncle load their own rounds to shoot long range. Dad was shooting the head of a bowling pin at 1000 yds.But he has also been shooting for 40 plus years. Most of it is experience but there are those that have something beyond that.
My ‘long range’ platform is a Cooper 52 Excalibur in 340 Weatherby Magnum. Not a competition platform but suitable for max distance big game. The scope I chose was a Leupold VXIII, 4.5-14X, 30mm/48 moa. Had the CDS dial set up for my chosen handload and had a Boone and Crockett reticle installed. It was a pig until I had a 'brake installed which ought to tighten my long range shots a bit.
Pops only uses leupold on most of his rifles. I think he uses a 300 magnum with a fluted barrel at the long range. He mostly shoots handguns. I always describe him to people as Burt from tremors.
