Let's talk DIY lights

If you want a lb per plant your going to need to learn lst topping and scrog and have some kick @$$ lighting and a bigger tent than 4x4

4x4 space is certainly big enough for a unit or more yield per grow, depending on how you decide to grow. In my 4x4 I have dried a few different configurations and generally come in right around a pound regardless of which one I try.

Six plants in there with no training and crappy lights yielded just under 5 ounces of actual buds.

Two plants side by side, both scrogged, yielded me just under 15 ounces (second grow attempt) - this time I had twice the light as the first time.

One plant scrogged, and one plant just topped and LST (also an auto), yielded me 19 ounces and change.

One plant scrogged and filling the entire tent by itself yielded me just under 15 ounces.

And the last run in the 4x4 flower tent was 7 clones together, dropped into the tent and put in flower a couple weeks after they rooted - and that one yielded just over a pound.

Right now I have 8 plants in the 4x4 (all from seed). We’ll see how it shakes out. I didn’t fill the entire tent so I’d be happy with 8oz or so out of this grow.

Once this one is done, I will refill my 4x4 with 16 clones and see how that produces.

All my grows have been hydro. Started with DWC, now running ebb and flow with a 3x3 tray and 40 gallon tote.

I can go to a 5x5, I just have to figure how much lighting to get for that space. Do two plants, scrog top lst all that… Is it possible to scrog an auto?

@dbrn32 Two XL 360 in a 5x5 would probably do her right?

As of this point, I’m thinking of just scrapping everything with my 3x3 except my fan and filter, moving it over to a bigger tent out of the closet and just using my guest room. Not like I have guests anyway :woman_shrugging:t2:

OR I can go ahead and get HLG-600H in anticipation of the 5x5 and just use it in my 3x3 until I upgrade. It’ll be more light than needed but it’s better than too little eh?

Ya that wouldn’t be too bad in 5x5. I would personally probably opt for 3 of the xl 260 kits for 5x5, gives a little more flexibility with spacing.

Autos not really ideal to do a large scrog. The predetermined veg time doesn’t really give you time to train to the screen.

Yes, but likely not ideal. The decision to scrog or not scrog an auto would be made by me at the first sign of pistils, based on the size of the plant. I wouldn’t bother to even consider it unless the plant got big enough to warrant it. I think I could’ve scrogged this auto:

But not this one:

And those are two wildly different examples of why I would wait until I saw how the plant made it to flower before deciding on the screen.

That’s my dilemma. I wouldn’t be able get an xl 260 to fit in my 3x3 for the time being. The 600 would have to work and then later on maybe hang an additional xl 260 in the 5x5 along with the 600 to be able to increase space flexibility

If you’re committed to moving to bigger space I would just grow with what you have until that happens. No sense in making temporary fixes that you’re already planning a big picture solution for.

That was my conclusion yesterday.

@beautifulL0V3 multiple smaller QB’s provide way more flexibility within your grow than one or two large ones IMO. Also; if I had a 5 X 5 tent I would plan on only utilizing the center 4 X 4 and leave the outer edges for mechanicals and for air flow and what not. I have a 4 X 6 and only use the center 3 feet (but the entire width).

Yes, I’m realizing such now. Thinking I could keep the 3x3 just to hang harvest or something instead of not using. I ended up getting the 600 and plan to maybe do a 4x8 if not the 5x5 and get a few XL 260 to hang in later if I need more coverage.

I’m sketching out a few RDWC to do in either size while I work on my technique on one plant in the 3x3 while these finish up.

FYI Arrow Electronics has 12% off.

I would consider going photo and using 3x3 as veg space with the 5x5 being flower room making perpetual harvest an achievable option

You will end up using both tents eventually, just have 6 white widow extreme seedlings and one experiment from a friend, they will go into the 4x4 and 3x3 for a 7 plant grow with the new Solskin boards.

I use a 3x3 to grow 2 plants for the first 40 days in(3/5 gal Bubble buckets) before I move them into the flower tent and net them to a 4x4 each. I have a 4x4 and a 5x5 tent but no room, only room for 3x3

@cmbx a 5x5 tent is about 2.3 square meters. If you plan on flowering in it I would recommend ppfd average of between 600-800 umols per second m². That’s going to require a total ppf of about 1400 umols/s to 1800 umols/s.

I would probably browse this thread a little or maybe do some web searching, see if there is a particular style of light you like. I can tell you what you’d need to do from there.

I’m just trying to figure out how people fit so many plants into a tent like that… obv they’re small plants but how do you know? I have about 30 seeds I bought, most auto but I did end up getting a few photo too.

Yes I plan on using the tent for flowering also, so is there a style you’d recommend that’s the most efficient for growth? What do you use? I just want something that will be more than enough for that size space, but not overkill.

I prefer cobs, but they’re more difficult to build with usually and strips and boards are usually a little more electrically efficient. Doesn’t really matter as far as getting the space lit properly, you can do that with all of them.

Im leaning toward Quantum boards, what do you think ?

Solid choice. Probably the easiest to get together and into tent.
