I have just transplanted to 3 gallon pots. No visible shock, looking good so far. I have seen some photos where growers put pebbles/small rocks on the top of their spoil. Is this recommended.? If so, what should I be using?

It’s a personal preference to put something on top of the soil. It’s supposed to keep evaporation down, but my personal opinion is that it’s not necessary.

The rocks on top also act as a water break. Helps for more evenly distributed water and doesn’t let the water disturb the soil and expose roots when you water.

A lot of growers use expanded clay pebbles like hydroton.
One of the perks is that roots will form all the way to the top of the soil. Even on top just under the pebbles. Is it worth it? Doubtful, but I have never tried it.

I think if I grew outside I might use it to slow down the evaporation.
It certainly wouldn’t hurt anything.
I used to but reclaiming the rocks after the grow was annoying so I stopped.

Yeah,heat is my biggest enemy at THUNDERDOME. I would compare my gardening style to Aunty Em mixed with Dr Frankenstein.
I increased my pot size from 10 to 15,20,and 25. Maybe the whole get the inner moisture ball to the size of a basketball, instead of a baseball will work for me.
@BobbyDigital I used red lava rock on top of my net pots and radicle bags.it was a pain to reclaim the rocks after.
@Spiney_norman I have heard of that method. I almost went down that path. I learned to never say never.
Now I only have (1) 10g net pot with red lava rock.
I grow outdoors, so the concept of retaining moisture was inviting,if not necessary.
I am a sick scientist, so I have multiple experiments going at the same time.
It’s like that Nicholas cage movie,“he found 3000 ways how to NOT make a light bulb”
I even had plastic water bottles ,with push pin holes placed to keep moist(some upright with holes at the bottom,and some I laid on their side)-but that was an experiment I will not try again.
I have converted most of my bags- no till 25g bags with lasagna layering… hay/straw covering the tops of my net pot/ radicle bag.i also utilize companion crops like clover to help keep soil alive and moist. Some pots are on their 3rd year of ROLS ,some 2.I took a lot from the mendo dope guys on YouTube.

Good growing !!! I’ve found the last 3 years growing with kind soil and coco loco have shown great results . No extra nutrients just add water when the top looks dry . I don’t transplant either . I grow straight out my 20 gallon fabric . The magic is light ! I went from 1000 to 4000. Good luck growing !!! Tent was to small moved to bathroom .bought some reflecting film .
