@W.B.elpaso Same with me as far a s growing plants…All kinds I got it from my Grandma and Dad…Ive been growing plants and what not since probably age7 or so…Tomatoes (Heirloom and domestic)bell peppers, radishes strawberries and loads of other veggies,Ive grown successfully (in pots mind you)…Fruit trees Apricots,Peaches, Nectarines,Plums Oranges,Tangerines ,Cherries ,Plums blueberries etc…So I do have the green thumb experience too! Now Ive always tried (as a teen) to grow weed but my Pops always found them and pulled them on me…Booo! So now Im in a legal state and can grow my heart out! But I hate those Caterpillars!!! and yes! @Cat1 Cutworms SUCK!! and yes I caught “some” rain water this year too although we haven’t had much rain this season…sounds like you guys have it goin on with those Green Houses!
@AL_GREEN. Once you get to play around in a hot house you get spoiled. Its really like cheating. With all the great products out today, if you do your research you cant lose. Unless you get bud rot, pest problems, cut worms catapillars or the two legged kind of thieves youll have success. Hahaha. Easy right.
@AL_GREEN I priced corrugated at Lowes and it was running $22+ for a 12’ clear sheet, I think I can cut it in half and get 2 6’ers I may have to stretch it a little and end up buying a extra sheet. I have gutter from my neighbor that I inherited. All I need is a rain barrel. I’m think’n 2 30gl. tied togather. To cut heat I’m going to use my ground cover on the roof under the clear corrugated. I’m going to try something new and grow some grapes, I see moonshine wine. I also have some wild “maypops” check it out, I have never heard of them until I had them come up in my yard. VERY strange flower but its been used buy indians for med. sedatives. for ever. Got to hit it at the just the right time it contains arsenic. Kinda like peyote.
I also grow in a greenhouse but slightly different construction to yours.
30% white shadecloth all round but it has uv protected horticultural plastic on the roof as well.
Therefore plenty of air movement, no bugs and no rain.
For water I use 2 x 1000ltr plastic pods. They are cheap as chips but just make sure that they have not been used for pesticide/herbicide. If you can get one that has had mollasses or food products your good to go. 2 of these will last me a whole season in our hot Aussie summer.
I might add that it is 30 x 30 x 12 feet.
@jtfoto Nice I would love to be able to have a 30’x30’ but my Home owners ass. would go ballistic. Thanks for the info on the plastic pods, thats good to know, I hadn’t even thought about pesticides. I hope with aluminum screen on the top half it will let enough air through to keep it cool.
Took some time this weekend to make the inside look good. Long way to go but this gives a idea what it will look like. I kinda enjoy this part even though it’s real hard on the back and knees, but thats why I grow it makes me feel good.
Keeping with the theme of “Greenhouse build on the cheap” I thought I was going to have to sell a kidney to pay for the lumber, but I found a honey hole. Developer started a new phase of houses 50+. High $, my guess is $750k or more (for those on the coast E&W NY and Cali. $750k here is like $2M there. Anyway when contractors buy lumber for a build normally they order 10% more for mistakes, bad wood, braces … Workers are more than happy to let you take scraps. Today I ask if I could pick their scrap pile and got a not just yes but hell yes. The more I take the less they have to clean up and put in dumpster. The houses are 2 story so some of the braces are long. I picked 2-12’s 4-studs 2-10’ and a.couple of 6’s all 2x4. Not a easy place to get to one way in and one way out. Shout out to my amigo roofers who helped me load my truck. I think I saved anywhere from $100-$125. Most important thing is I cut ties with the big blue box lumber store. Free wood.
Rain tomorrow morning but I might be able to get some up tomorrow afternoon.
When I worked in new construction years ago on a water treatment plant a friend asked me what they where going to do with all the 2x4’s from concrete forms I asked the superintendent he said they would go in a dumpster. I told him one of my guys wanted some. He said they where full of nails, my buddy said he had 5 kids at home that he would put to work LOL. He was building a bakery by his home.
@Cat1. Nice pick up on the wood. Its a valuable resource to find these days. Your still paying for it with gas to get it home. 50 bucks was not even a half tank in my truck.
Time for some good weather and away we grow.
@Deepsix This Builder had 1 dumpster for every 3 homes, one block had 4 20’ dumpsters. What a waste.
@W.B.elpaso Build is a 2 mile round trip, no gas just time. Cat
Enough chit chat. Get to work. Hahaha.
Im still procrastanating putting the plastic on the roof. I know i need to get it done. I got everything just sitting there.
@W.B.elpaso I tell Mrs. Cat I don’t procrastinate, I just like to make sure I think things out fully.
Transplanted my clone today, I don’t know what happened but this Mother plant took off and the clone has multiroots that are over 6" after 3 weeks. Wish me luck I hope she goes crazy. Cat.
She sounds like a hardy and healthy one!
Well, weather is turning in my srea. Its time to float some seeds. So happy. Hope i get them all to pop. I got 4 strains with only 1 seed of each. Non germanating seeds will spoil my plan. I have others but no way to replace a few.
Still getting into the high 30s low 40s at night here, its 2:30 and 61. Thats why the clone, just giving mother nature a helping hand.
Sorry I didnt reply sooner, yes it very much does keep the rain out if you so choose.
