Checkout Eden Brothers seeds for African marigolds. Amazing smell cover when in mass. Extremely drought tolerant. Mine have grown over three foot tall twice after cut back. Had maybe 2” rain this year. When it did rain they fell over.

They grow them in NY and above. You just gotta cut back, bring them inside and keep bone dry for hibernation. Just saying it’s possible to grow them up north.
Edit: Temps 70+ and inside 50 when drops leaves
