I use pipe cleaners. Gentle on the stems.

The top is graveyard dead but the rest of the plant seems to pretty much not be phased at all.

You essentially topped it. Most people do not top autosâŚbut very common for photos. The plant will do just fine, you just broke the apical dominance and all that energy goes to the rest of the plant.
