Good day yall, I want to welcome everyone to my simple grow, and a big welcome back to those of my grow family here ![]()
I need to say I been doing the same thing give or take a few basic changes for the last 9 years, 3 grows per year and I have ironed out most of the bugs, but I do a Big no no in growing circles, I only use Miracle grow potting mix, the dreaded MIRACLE GROW, most people think Oh soil, Miracle grow has a dozen different recipes from real organic soil to peat only, and their potting mix which I use is the stuff that says feeds for 6 months, has time released nutes because all the ingredients are organic but do not break down, wood chips, peat and sphagnum mosses, coir, mixed with perlite and nutes, basically a hydro medium with extra time released nutes.
I’m a fan of hydro systems and treat my grow as such, with watering similar to coco, but miracle grow allows better breathing, but my biggest thing is I never allow my medium dry out, too much oxygen can be detrimental and cause stress. I always keep my root zone at least moist. Kind of a flood and drain system.
Simple to me means I water lights and nutes and additives cal mag and silicon, and fans, that is about it, I do pay attention to my ppms, but I DON’T Ph my water nor do I pamper my plants, I can’t afford to use air conditioner for myself I’m sure not going to do it for my plants, nor do I use any humidifier/ dehumidifier. My plants don’t always have the greatest VDP but it has never hurt my plants.
Okay I have a hundred things to explain about how I am able to use a hard material like Miracle grow potting mix, how I fixed all the bad stuff and can now say I am pretty successful, but I will try to stick to the basics for now.
Here is my basic set up: Miracle grow potting mix, 3gal plastic pots, both veg and flowering nutes, HLG lights 100w and 200w during appreciate time, and a 3ft tower fan and two 6 inch clip-on fans for flowering canopy. I have 4 pots but only keeping the best 3 girls after a couple weeks, giving 4th to a buddy.
Because miracle grow potting mix is very inconsistent in mixture, so to insure I have consistency I put all 4 pots on my kitchen floor and open one of 4 bags and disperse equal amounts in each pot, do the same with bags 2 3 and 4th bags until all the pots are full, now my ppms will be somewhat close during the grow.
Now I am ready to plant but I need to explain my watering plan, I do not wet my whole pot, I water to the size of the plant
One of the problems with miracle grow potting mix / mgpm is it is known as a very hot
soil. In order to keep from burning my seedlings I only wet the root zone needed for the size of the plant, so only the fertilizers in watered areas are activated, as the plants get taller and wider I increasing the amount of water wider around and deeper until watering to run off in a couple weeks.
Today this is my process for planting my seeds, one pot, one 16oz cup of water and the star the seed.
I make a half inch deep hole in the middle of the pot, drop in a seed, cover carefully with just soft peat material, and then very carefully pour around the seed in close circles, don’t upset the seed, but a couple inches around, this causes the water to get deep where the new tap roots are going to be exploring in the next week or so.
I say water as deep as the plant is tall and as wide as the tips of the leafs, this one 16oz cup of water will take care of the seedling for about a week, before flooding the root zone again, the only other thing is I never let the seeds dry out during germination, once a day I pour just enough to wet seed, after they pop above ground I let them be for several days, their root zone is nice and moist for the young roots
Here is what the closet has looked like for the last 3 days, one 100w veg spectrum light for starters
I’m going to say today I have 3 girls above ground Pineapple express auto, Apple fritter photo, and Girl scout cookie extreme photo, but I am not going to post this until tomorrow to see if White truffle photo pops, and it is getting late and I don’t have time to finish what I have to do.
One of the reasons I keep the peat wet on the seed is seeds are prone to helmet head, or when the seed casings don’t shead off. It happens a lot if there is no sticks and corse material like small rocks and sand etc, but I wet the peat wet so it is as dense as I can make it for a half an inch of material. It worked for the first 2, but GSCE was up but had a bad clamped on helmet, I believe the sooner I can get the seed shell the better, if left to shed shells by themselves it can cause delays, and for my grow a couple days can make a difference.
So my favorite tool for prying open the seeds shells is a fingernail and a toothpick, pinning the bent over seedling to the ground holding the left side shell with fingernail and pry the right side shell apart
Goodnight will pick up again tomorrow
Okay today 4th day and still waiting for White truffle photo but 3 are standing tall so we got three for a grow.
Here is Pineapple express auto
Here is Apple fritter photo
And Here is Girl scout cookie extreme photo
