Cat’s Runtz Grow Journal (featuring monster-cropping)

i like 7 gallon pots but took up to much room in my 4x4, and 3 gallon seems small to me, so i think i am going with 5 gallon with my autos

@CatDadPower Agree with @BudzMS. I’d use 5gal. unless you need to keep plants smaller. Bigger pot bigger plant? Bigger plant, more weeeed but I’m still on 1st grow but have read that in a lot of grow threads. And don’t they grow to kinda fit the pot/areas size? Are you going to scrog them? I have 2 plants in 3x3 & could fit one more 5gal comfortably add one more. 4 would be need smaller pots or they’d be seriously squished… I believe I read one plant per 2x2 square so that would equal 4 plants. Again, I could be completely wrong. I just woke up They’re sure starting out pretty :star_struck::v:

I think 4 x 5 gallon pots would/could fill a 4x4.

3-Gallon Transplant

Leveled up! My plants met both of the two criteria to move to the next growing space: outgrow the original container’s diameter, and needing water within 96 hrs of the previous saturation.

I transplanted a day after watering into a pre-made hole using the previous container size. Inside, I sprinkled in about 1/8tsp of Great White mycorrhiza before placing in the root ball (if root balls fall apart at this stage then transplanting took place way too early).

The reason I always aim to transplant as LATE as possible is because generally, the soil it’s in is still viable and at a high enough PPM that I don’t need to feed. I also water one day prior to transplanting, so that I don’t need to water the day of transplant. This is important because going from around 1500 PPM happy frog to around 4000 PPM ocean forest can be a huge shock to your plants… saturating the new soil can curl those leaves within 24hrs of transplant. This is why I never water my plants in — it gives them a few additional days to adjust to a higher PPM environment, reducing chances of stress herming.

These girls will likely stay in 3-gallon until just before the flip to flower (the finalists will undergo one more transplant to 5-gallon containers a few days before the flip and final topping.

Got a little side project that I’m finally ready to let out of the bag… so the mother I used for my Runtz clones revegged after I put it outside to die with the compost pile! There was barely more than a pot and stick remaining after I took off all the clones, so I definitely didn’t expect the plant to survive. One day I came outside and saw the familiar reveg “basil” leaves shooting out, and just decided to keep taking care of it.

Now I’m taking care of her and hoping to have a little bonus yield at the end of the season. Only a 5 gallon pot, but should be an interesting grow!

Veg, Week 4:

Time for everyone’s weekly tent update!! Finally watered the girls after a little over a week, each received 100ppm of Cal Mag and 1 tbsp of Yucca extract to help better saturate the growing medium.

Since our last update, the seed grown girls have all undergone their second topping, and are finally filling out to a nice bushy shape. Clones are still branching out even without a single topping. Super cropping is currently being used to even out unusually tall branches and shape a nice wide canopy.

Pardon the appearance, went a little DE crazy after a minor pest issue.

Bonus post!

Decided to do some housekeeping and split them up so I can judge 50% floor coverage a bit easier. Much nicer looking now :sunglasses:

I love DE. I haven’t used it on this grow but have used on pests. Put around outside of door going into garage when creepy crawlers can enter somehow. I always put on ant beds & works great for that. I even put it in the cream deodorant I make for myself & by accident realized it’s got same active ingredients as calamine lotion so I used it on itchy bug bites now. Also threw some on a huge ~3inch spider today! I’m not against bugs unless it’s inside my house then all bets are off! Lol

@CatDadPower what is DE?

@new2-420 Diatomaceous Earth. It’s excellent for pest control. You can even eat it, put on animals for fleas, ect. Just always make positive that it’s good grade. Home Dep Carrie’s it but not food grade. I get mine at Amazon & it’s not expensive.

Thank you! I know what it is, now that the initials have been explained! HAHA :call_me_hand: :call_me_hand:

Ikr? Fingers get tired of typing so I know I use initials as shortcut.

Just diatomaceous earth. I put it in a sprayer and now I do light coat on the floors and walls before any plants go in my tent to help pests before I actually notice them.

@CatDadPower Whats the ratio you use? Does it leave a white powder film on what you’ve sprayed it on? I haven’t done it that way before but I’ve mostly used it outside & on a few big bugs but I just throw a handful on them lol. I think on the ant beds it has to be dry? I’ll have to look that up. Spray would definitely be easier! :sunglasses:

The directions call for two cups per gallon, so that’s what I have been using. The DE settles to the bottom of the sprayer after some time, so shake often. It’s way easier to apply to large areas, but as you guessed will leave everything in a thin film of white powder. Personally, I spray my tent walls and floor really good before I put plants in there. I also spray a thin film around the perimeter of my tent to stop crawling insects from making their way in. Insects will avoid large heaps of DE haphazardly sprinkled on top of soil, so I find this method provides the best coverage and protection than old school dusting and sprinkling.

I will also be mixing this into my next transplant soil to stop larvae and dirt-dwelling pests before they multiply. More of a precaution than anything since I live in a buggy part of the world.

I didn’t utilize super-cropping in my first grow, so this was a bit nerve-wracking! I bent the stems radially like numbers on a clock to help encourage maximum area coverage.

All clones (since they’re growing like crazy) have been super-cropped! Hoping for them to make a speedy recovery. This tent is entirely monster cropped clones.

Made a boo-boo on my first attempt…so I secured them in place with some tape. I hope they recover!

Week 5 Veg

Pardon our appearance, I applied some DE and Dr. Zymes earlier this week to help kill off any pesky thrips (started to find evidence on lower leaves). But the leaves are praying nicely. The top tent has only been watered once since transplant, and the other one it still holding out and waiting on its first 3 gallon watering.

The plants have recovered excellently from super-cropping, including the two taped branches! Hmmm… starting to think I might just flower 4 plants in 7 gallon pots in all three tents …
