Brittle stems new plants

Every time me seedlings grow to about 4 inches the stems break about two weeks after two sets of leaves

Welcome to the forum.

Pics of what you are experiencing will help us determine the problem, but I suspect overwatering, as this will weaken stems. They don’t get brittle, but they become thin and flimsy.

Seedlings should only get a couple ml of water per day.

Additionally, if you have 4 inch seedlings with only 2 sets of leaves, then it is likely that the lighting intensity is inadequate. What are you using for lighting?

These assumptions are about the most one can say without seeing what is going on via pics.

Thanks for hitting me back I was told about the watering so I cut back and started new seeds and it happened again I chucked the plants so I can’t send pics it’s going to get colder tomorrow so I’ll be bringing inside for better control of conditions

“Damping off” is a term use to describe when seedlings fold over at the very base of the stem where it meets the soil, its almost always due to over watering.

Is this how yours is breaking righy at the soil and not actually breaking into 2 peices, or are the folding over higher up away from the soil and still not actually becoming 2 peices?

Or do you mean they are actually shaping into to peices like a stick, as in they are stiff to the touch? Because that last option would be something new to me :man_shrugging:.

We definitely need some pictures and no hurry, just when you able…

And welcome to the forum, rest assure we will get you straightened out

Sounds like inadequate light as well. At 4" I usually have 4 or 5 sets of leaves.

There breaking at soil but folding in half first I sometimes forget about seeds germinating and root gets about 1 12 inches long is that a problem also

With germination a long “tap” root is not a problem as long as you can get it planted without breaking it off.

Most will say a long tap root when germinateing is a good thing and i will agree for most it is.
But in my case, my hands don’t work like they use to so i no longer germinate in water, i just plant them in a cup of coco-coir or a peat pod…

But sounds like it’s typical “damping off”.

Theres some good videos on YouTube on “how to avoid damping off”. I’m omw out the door to work atm so i can’t find and link one.

Don’t feel to bad man, I been growing for years and still have seedlings die sometimes.

I can grow

But as you see, i over watered these 4 and one of them in the back is not going to make it

Welcome to the community . Maybe try a little backfill up on the stem add a small to create a little breeze to help strengthen the steams. also you might look at the lighting.
Good luck :v:
